From our Arts & Sciences Champion

Unto the populace of Mons Tonitrus, Greetings!

Some of you have never entered an Arts & Sciences competition, and some have entered in the past but not recently. I would like to encourage everyone to enter next year's competition. It's fun, rewarding, and challenging, and
the more entries we have the better the event is for the populace.

Writing the documentation may seem difficult, but once you do the research,
the documentation is easy. The research is the really fun part, at least
for me. I like to do the research before I make the item, if possible.
That makes it easier to be sure that the way I'm making the entry is really
period, or as close to period as I can make it.

It's nice to live in a small town, but when it comes to doing the research
for A & S, that can be a hindrance. Our library doesn't have a lot of the
resources that we need. However, we have several other resources available
to us:  the Internet, the University of Arizona library, and inter-library
loans.

A library card at the University of Arizona costs $25 per year. The library
is split into separate buildings, and some buildings have very restricted
hours or other limits. The Special Collections building, for example, has
many rare and expensive books, but is not open on holidays or Sundays. The
books in Special Collections cannot be checked out but can be photocopied.

Inter-library loans are available through our local library. If possible,
it's best to find out where the book you're seeking can be found before
using an inter-library loan. Then you can tell the librarian specifically
where to request the book.

Be careful when using Internet sources. Make sure the source you use
references a book or painting, and is not just conjecture on the part of the
author.   Remember, just because you read it online doesn't mean it's true.

If you have a project in mind but are having trouble finding resources to
document it, or determining what category it might belong in, please contact
either the A & S minister or myself, and we will be happy to assist you.

Yours In Service,
Lady Meadhbh
