Submitted Article 1 : Games Lessons

This is by no means a comprehensive list of all of our experiences, but in time it will come - don't worry.

On my first day at QE Boys, a bald pot-bellied man who looked like he'd have a heart attack if he had to run for the bus walked into the gym and introduced himself at the head of the gym department - Mr Maughn. I have to say I seriously doubted that, but we took his word for it, and I can honestly say that he was the least inspiring man I have ever met, in the whole five years at QE I have never seen him participate in any of the exercises, he was shorted dubbed "one-eye Maughn" by the more inspired pupils present due to his glass eye.

I'll never forget how the games teachers used to tell us that if we refused to use the minuscule filthy communal showers filled with 90 other boys after games before going home then we obviously have "something to be ashamed of" - surely just their way of encouraging a group of young lads to strip naked and shower together in front of them - but I guess they didn't have the mental attributes to teach anything more taxing or to inspire young minds to give it their all - shouting "block run" was more their style - sending the budding students on run, which involved half an hour of walking pointlessly around the grounds outside the school, then to return to the gym to change and go home.

One thing I can never forget (apart from Mr Maughn wearing the same pair of trainers for the five years) is the blatant favouritism, and believe me it wasn't just in the games department - boys that were good at sports were given a choice of what they wanted to do whilst the rest of the students had to go on the infamous 'block run', just another fault in the QE Boys education system - Lack of encouragement, "a healthy body is a healthy mind" they used to tell us, but never once showed any conviction in their own creation by encouraging students to take part, simply by using verbal threats in order to work against the students rather than with them.
