Buddhist Meditation

Meditation

Where mind & body unite to form a strong spirit.

John Bartlett is a Clinical Hypnotherapist with a Masters Degree in Psychology. He has integrated this knowledge with martial arts meditation techniques (Qigong and Zen) to allow the opportunity for very deep meditation experiences. Although hypnotherapy and meditation are two distinct disciplines, there is much overlap between the two. When someone learns to meditate well, then also learns self-hypnosis, that person is able to reach deeper meditation levels, and is also more able to make personal changes in his or her life through the power of suggestion.

Mind

Your existential experience of the world.

What is meditation?

Meditation is whatever you focus your mind on. You decide where and on what to direct your mind, where to center the essence of your being. When focusing on relaxing, you easily enter a trance state. A trance state is when you are subconscious dominant, very relaxed, still aware of your environment, and in control. This state of mind happens to you all the time, naturally, but most people are simply not aware of it. A trance state can be anywhere from mildly relaxing, to being in a very deep altered state of awareness, sort of like maintaining the state of awareness you experience just before going to sleep, but not asleep.

How does learning work?

The critical factor of your mind--part conscious, part subconscious--filters information into your memory banks. Everything gets in, everything you ever experienced--every sight, sound, smell, taste, and feeling--but the critical factor determines where it is stored. It decides based on what you already believe is true. That is why you need to relax and temporarily rid yourself of your ego. When your conscious mind is relaxed your critical factor is relaxed. This is accomplished naturally or in a controlled situation by meditation or by hypnotic induction. Then you are open to learning--through suggestion--whatever old learning you would like to replace, add to, or change in some way. Maybe you would just like to do your forms better.

What can meditation do for me?

Meditation can help in two basic ways. First, meditating regularly will allow your whole self to heal and rejuvinate itself the way it is designed to do, as best as possible for your unique situation. Second, it can help you replace past learning with suggestions for emotional, cognitive, and behavioral changes. Is there something in your present life that you would like to change? Maybe you would like to experience doing a Taijiquan form in a trance state.

Body

A master expresses his art in every movement.

No movement...no life.

A healthy body helps make a healthy mind. We need full spectrum light (natural is best), clean air and water, and healthy food for fuel. Then we need to use the fuel by moving, or the fuel is wasted or stored as fat. Without excercise our bodies would atrophy. How much excercise a person is willing to do, or actually needs, varies quite a bit; but we all need to move enough so that our muscles, tendons, ligaments, organs, etc. keep toned, flexible and healthy. Applying this simple idea to your daily routine will help prevent many aches and pains in your life. The body follows the mind...keep your mind on something fun and healthy.

Along the years that John has spent studying psychology, he has kept in shape by practicing martial arts. He has studied and taught several different martial arts styles--Karate, Judo, Aikido, Taekwondo, Kempo, Muay Thai, Jeet Kune Do, Taijiquan--and has now integrated this training, including the meditative aspects of Qigong (the art and science of circulating the life-energy in our bodies) and Zen (the stillness of no mind) into his holistic-health practice. If you're interested in getting in shape, getting rid of bad habits, or want to improve on something you already do well...remember...the body follows the mind!

Spirit

Mind is the target, body is the arrow, spirit is the bow.

Spirit is the prime mover--the intelligent energy behind, around, and within all life. The subconscious mind puts us in direct communication with the spiritual aspects of ourselves and allows us the opportunity to make choices at a deep level. This allows for change at a conscious level that is not in conflict with our total selves. Our thoughts and feelings become united as we move towards enlightenment.
