Martin Luther King, Jr. was born at the family home, 501 Auburn Avenue, N.E., Atlanta, Georgia on January 15, 1929.
The King family spent a lot of time in church. Reverend King was the pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church. Martin Luther King Jr. loved to sit and listen to his father preach.He married Coretta Scott of Marion, Alabama on June 18, 1953. The marriage ceremony took place on the lawn of the Scott's home in Marion. The marriage was blessed with the birth of four children. Dexter Scott on January 30, 1961 in Atlanta, Georgia, and Bernice Albertine on March 28, 1963 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Martin Luther King Jr. graduated from Morehouse College in 1948, received the Bachelor of Divinity degree from Crozier Theological Seminary in 1951. The Doctor of Philosophy degree from Boston University in 1955. As a pastor of a Baptist church in Montgomery, Alabama, he organized a Black bus boycott. His "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" inspired the growing civil rights movement. He was the founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, out of which have come other leaders such as Jesse Jackson and
Andrew Young.
One of the leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. King was an advocate of non-violent
protest. He staged sit-ins and marches all over the U.S. in the early 1960s. In 1963 he led a massive march on Washington DC where he delivered his now famous, "I Have A Dream,"
speech. In 1964 he received the Nobel Peace prize. He opposed the Vietnam War in 1967 and was turning his attention to a nationwide campaign to help the poor at the time of his death. In 1968, he was assassinated. Dr. King was shot while standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968, by James Earl Ray.
