Our progress through the month of February 1999:   
Math:
Kevin is continuing with his Saxon Algebra 2. He has studied parallelograms; only zero=zero; difference of two squares; the rhombus; estimating with scientific notation; sine, cosine & tangent; and radicals to fractional exponents !   
Erin  is continuing with Saxon Algebra 1/2.  She has studied equivalent equations; the multiplication rule; overall average; division in order of operations; multiplying and dividing mixed numbers; exponents and roots; and volume. 
 
Vocabulary, Language Arts:   In Vocabulary we are continuing our weekly lists of 15 words.
  We had a test on Units 33 to 36 this week (60 words in all)--Kevin scored a perfect 100%, while Erin  had a 97% WOW !!
In Language Arts we are using the Easy Writing  workbook by Wanda Phillips. we continue with past participle phrases, now using "having" as the helping verb.
 
We are also continuing Greek and Latin root words-to help with our vocabulary skills-the words we've learned are--
 
-   lithos - stone
 -   petros - rock
 -   astron - star (Greek)
 -   stella - star (Latin)
  
Writing Strands: 
This year we have selected Writing Strands Series(Level 5 & 6) from the National Writing Institute to help with our creative writing. This month were concentrated on letter-writing, including, letters of inquiry, letters of complaint and ordering merchandise.
 
Reading:  Kevin and Erin- will both be turning in one Book Report each month.  The new books they have chosen are- 
    Kevin- The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells  
    Erin- Christie, The Bridge to Cutter Gap by Catherine Marshall 
  
The requirements for each Book Report are--
 
- Title & Author
 - List 5 unfamiliar words: define & use in a sentence
 - Main Characters
 - Setting
 - Plot
 - Type of Book
 - Opinion
 - Expected Schedule---
- Outline-Due first Friday of month
 - Rough Draft-Due second Friday of month
 - Corrections-Due third Friday of month
 - Final Draft-Due end of month
  
  
Social Studies:  We have begun our study of Egypt.  We have learned about the pyramids and their architecture, the Temple of Amun at Karnak, and Egyptian Art.
 
Science:  This year our science course is Biology. 
We are studying plants.  We have had a major test on algae, green and flowering plants. Both Kevin and Erin earned a 100% on this test.  We will now move into the animal kingdom.
 
Bible Studies: We are discussing the Book of Matthew as a family Bible study. Dad is leading our study group. In February we have learned:  
 
-  Matthew 18 -- Who is the Greatest ? Lost Sheep, Unforgiving Servant
 -  Matthew 19 -- Suffer the Children, The Rich Young Man & the Last Shall Be First
 -  Matthew 20 -- Vineyard parable, Greatness in Serving & the two blind men
 -  Matthew 21-- The triumphal entry, the fig tree & the wicked vinedressers
  
Computer:   Kevin and Erin continue work on their homepages.

The Fine Arts:  We continue our Art unit on Pop Art Posters. Our final project for the semester is to design and create our own posters for our rooms.
We are adding to the posters each week, tryng to be patient and not rush through our work.  Kevin  has finished the lettering and sword for his "Legend of Zelda" poster, and Erin  has all the sections sketched in for her KISS 108 poster.
 
Sign Language:  In ASL we have learned or reviewed: 
 
-  Cities, States, Countries and Government
 -  Numbers, Money & Quantity
 -  Health, Medical & the Body
  
Future Plans: In March--???
