Kappa-Epsilon Academy
January 1999

Our progress through the month of January:

Math: Kevin is continuing with his Saxon Algebra 2. He has learned about value word problems, simplification of radicals, scientific notation, uniform motion problems about equal distances, graphical solutions, fractional equations, monomial factoring, cancellation, trinomial factoring, rational equations, complex fractions, deductve reasoning, elucid, remote interior angles, quotient theorem for square roots, congruency, major rules of fractions, D1+k=D2, angles in polygons, contrived problems, and chemical compounds.
Erin is continuing with Saxon Algebra 1/2. She has learned averaging, multiple fractional factors, unit multipliers, metric length conversions, area as a difference, mode, median, and mean, averaging in word problems, areas of triangles, improper fractions and mixed numbers, graphs, least common multiple, adding fractions, order of operations, variables and evaluation, multiple unit multipliers, adding mixed numbers, rate, mixed number subtraction, rate word problems, equations, answer and solutions.

Vocabulary, Language Arts: In Vocabulary we are continuing our weekly lists of 15 words.
In Language Arts we are using the Easy Writing workbook by Wanda Phillips. This Month we are learning about past participles.
We are also continuing Greek and Latin root words-to help with our vocabulary skills-the words we've learned are--

  • terra -land
  • dormio, dormitum -sleep (Latin)
  • hypnos -sleep (Greek)
  • annus -year
We are supplementing our G/L root-words with a fun workbook called Word-Wiz by Cherie Blanchard. Each lesson focuses on one root word, showing how you can combine it with other prefixes, suffixes and roots to make new words.

Writing Strands: This year we have selected Writing Strands Series(Level 5 & 6) from the National Writing Institute to help with our creative writing. Our latest assignments was to write a descriptive story about both a new and old house, using a similar style for each.

Reading: Kevin and Erin will both be turning in one Book Report each month. The new books they have chosen are-
    Kevin- Marlfox by Brian Jacques
    Erin- The Phantom Toolbooth by Norton Juster

The requirements for each Book Report are--

  • Title & Author
  • List 5 unfamiliar words: define & use in a sentence
  • Main Characters
  • Setting
  • Plot
  • Type of Book
  • Opinion
  • Expected Schedule---
    • Outline-Due first Friday of month
    • Rough Draft-Due second Friday of month
    • Corrections-Due third Friday of month
    • Final Draft-Due end of month

Social Studies: In Social Studies we have begun our study on Africa, concentrating on the North Sahara regions

  • Burkina Faso (Done)
  • Mali (Done)
  • Mauritania (Done)
  • Morroco, and Western Sahara (Done)
  • Algeria (Done)
  • Tunisia (Done)
  • Libya (Done)
    Now--on to EGYPT !!

Science: This year our science course is Biology. Kevin and Erin are learning about plants and their "relatives".

Bible Studies: We are discussing the Book of Matthew as a family Bible study. Dad is leading our study group. In January we have learned:

  • Matthew 14 -- The Feeding of Five Thousand
  • Matthew 15 -- Testing the Disciples
  • Matthew 16 -- Jesus Predicts His Death
  • Matthew 17-- Transfiguration

Computer: Kevin and Erin continue work on their homepages.

The Fine Arts: This month we begin our next Art unit, Pop Art Posters. Our final project for the semester will be designing and creating our own posters for our rooms.
We have finished work on the sketches and are now beginning to work on the actual posters. Kevin has decided to do a "Legend of Zelda" poster, and Erin is doing a poster for her favorite radio station; KISS 108.

Sign Language: In ASL we have learned or reviewed:

  • God and Religion
  • School, Careers, Communication
We are using an excellent resource book Signing Illustrated by Mickey Flodin.
