Progress Report


October 1997

Here is what we have done in October:

Math: Kevin has begun his Algebra studies in the Saxon Algebra 1 book. These lessons have covered Geometric area computation, multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers and decimals. {Okay--so do YOU know the formula for discovering the surface area of a cylinder ??}
Erin's Saxon Math book has her working on more difficult basic skills work, money problems, place value, and negative & positive numbers on the number line.

Vocabulary, Language Arts: In Vocabulary, we are continuining weekly lists of 15 words. We look up the definitions, use the words in sentences, and then have our Test each Friday. On Friday, October 10th, we had a major test on the first 4 Vocabulary lists-both Kevin and Erin each scored 100% ! Magnificent !
In Language Arts we had our first Preposition test-Kevin and Erin both did wonderfully on this test also !
Our Greek Words that we've learned in October--

Reading: Kevin and Erin will both be turning in one Book Report each month. The books they have chosen for October are-
     Kevin- Mattimeo by Brian Jacques
     Erin- The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
October 28 Kevin and Erin have finished their book reports and have chosen new books-
     Kevin- The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
     Erin- The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Social Studies: In Social Studies we are continuing our study of Africa.

  • Lesotho
  • Swaziland
  • Mozambique
  • Zimbabwe
  • Malawi
  • Angola
  • Namibia
  • Zambia
  • Botswansa
Kevin and Erin will again be doing a report on the subject of their choice- Erin will be reporting on the "zorilla" Kevin will be doing a report on the geography of Namibia.

Science: We are using Unit Studies in Science. Our first unit is Astronomy. This month we will be studying the Sun, the Planets and the Moon. We have also learned about retrograde motion and Kepler's laws of planetary motion.

Bible Studies: We are reading The Parables of Jesus a wonderful book by Simon Kistemaker. We discuss one parable a week, talking about it's historical meaning, it's symbolism, and how we can employ it's message in our own lives. These are the Parables we have discussed this month-

  • SOWER- Matthew 13:1-9, Mark 4:1-9, Luke 8:4-8
  • SEED GROWING SECRETLY- Mark 4:26-29
  • WHEAT AND WEEDS- Matthew 13:24-30
  • MUSTARD SEED- Matthew 13:31-32, Mark 4:30-32, Luke 13:18-19
  • YEAST- Matthew 13:33, Luke 13:20-21

Computer: Kevin will be continuing his work on his Redwall page and Erin has updated her page.

Art & Music: In Art Kevin and Erin are painting "chromotropism" (turning of colors) as seen in the Autumn leaves.
In Music we have continued with the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber; CATS, The Phantom of the Opera, and Jesus Christ Superstar. We have also watched the movie version of Jesus Christ Superstar.

Physical Education: We have been Rollerblading outside in the afternoon. Even Mom has been Roller Skating--she's pretty clutzy though !

Future Plans: In November-- Paint a harvest picture. Begin study of the planets. Finish Andrew Lloyd Weber studies. Begin next region of Africa.
