Our Homeschool Progress Report
November 1997
Here is what we have done in November:
Math:
Kevin has been learning about integers (negative and positive numbers), the absolute value of a number, and negative and positive fractions. He is also learning order of operations in complex equations.
Erin has been working on word problems, mixed numbers, and adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions.
Kevin and Erin both had a unit Math test this month, Kevin scored an 88% and Erin scored a 96%. Excellent work, kids !
Vocabulary, Language Arts: In Vocabulary we are continuing with weekly lists of 15 words. On Friday, November 21st, we had a major test on the second group of 4 Vocabulary lists-both Kevin and Erin scored 100% yet again ! Magnificent !
Even more importantly, they are beginning to point out when they come across vocabulary words in literature, or hear them in movies or on television.
In Language Arts we are studying predicate nominatives and adjectives, irregular verbs, subject/verb agreement and tense.

Reading: Kevin and Erin are working on their Book Reports for this month. The books they have chosen for November/December are-
Kevin- The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
Erin- The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Social Studies: In Social Studies we are continuing our study of Africa, moving up the continent to:
- Tanzania
- Kenya
- Uganda
- Rwanda
- Burundi
- Zaire
- Congo
- Gabon
- Equatorial Guinea
Science: In our Astronomy Unit we are learning about the Planets at this time. Some of the things we are learning are, the terrestrial and gas planets, density and mass of the planets, moons and rings, planet temperature, and the length of a day and a year on each planet.
Our Planets test in Astronomy was on November 26th- Erin received a 98% and Kevin earned a 100% !
Bible Studies: We are reading The Parables of Jesus a wonderful book by Simon Kistemaker. We discuss one parable a week, talking about it's historical meaning, it's symbolism, and how we can employ it's message in our own lives. These are the Parables we have discussed this month-

Computer: Kevin has created a new Redwall Club page in Enchanted Forest. It is called-
Paladin Castle (please visit !)
Erin has updated her family page, and she is beginning work on a Hercules and Xena page.
Art & Music: In Art Kevin and Erin painted a "Harvest" picture this month,and are continuing on their water color studies.
In Music we are completing our study on the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber; we will begin Tchaikovsky as our next composer. We were planning to do Beethoven but decided to switch since the "Nutcraker" season is coming up.
Physical Education: This month-sledding has been our main activity. We had a snowstorm on the weekend of November 14-15th and the snow has remained for a while. We also took some long hikes on the beach.
Future Plans: In December--Tchaikovsky, finishing Central Equatorial Africa, Book Reports Due on Dec. 12th, Math tests for both kids, French sentences and Numbers
