Chives

Perennial

For many years and still to this day, my mother always grew chives just outside the front door.

Chives are a member of the onion family and my brother and I were often sent out, kitchen scissors in hand, to snip a few strands for use in a meal.

My mother used chives mostly in salads and soups, but their mild onion flavour goes very well in salad dressings, with scrambled eggs, in mashed potatoes, cream soups, with steamed cauliflower and carrots. When I have fresh chives, I like to add them to a cream cheese dip / spread that I make.
