There was a man for whom God had a plan,
And Jonah was his name.
Stubbornness was his "claim to fame," Till The Lord came to make him tame! The Lord of All decided to call This man to do His Bidding. Jonah said, "I won't; I'll run away; I think He must be kidding!"
(God already knows people's future, by name; So why should I play this game?
Whether I go, or whether I stay, It's really all the same!)
But The Lord of All continued to call, For He wanted someone to tell Ninevah:
or God will come judge in 40 days!"
Would Jonah obey? No, not that day.
He could only think of himself.
He got on a ship going the other way,
And sought to hide from God.
What a silly thought - the way Jonah sought -
To hide from The Lord of All.
There's no place to go, where God would not know,
Not even behind a high wall!
From the time of Man's Fall, he has run from God's Call,
But The Lord has never been fooled.
He has come after Man, and Woman too,
Saying "Please, just try to stay cool.
I have a great plan, if before Me you'll stand,
And be taught of such ways in My School!"
But Jonah would not hear from God at that time,
And he took a trip on a boat.
It didn't go far, when signs started to mar
The men who were with him afloat.
The Lord sent storms and winds and scares
To cause them all to vote
To put poor Jonah off the boat, so they could stay afloat.
The Lord wanted Jonah to be a real loner,
So that he would learn to obey!
He would find that in time of great need for a man,
The one thing to do is to pray!
Things got worse for a time, when a fish came from behind
And decided to swallow poor Jonah.
But
Jonah prayed, and so The Lord made a way of rescue there.
He took him from the belly of the whale,
And by this showed His Mighty Care.
When God gave His plan, this submissive man said,
"Yes Sir, whatever you will."
I'll go to Ninevah and preach to each sinner,
But the the results may still be very nill.
Would you ever guess, the people were blessed!
They listened and promised to repent.
They were glad that God sent a man who meant
To teach them what they had done wrong;
(For they didn't know The Law of God,
And had done their own will for so long.)
They fasted and prayed,
while Jonah went, to vent
His anger -- sent by a strong --
Sense of grievance against the Lord for knowing -
That they would repent all along!
After this, Jonah felt, when the people knelt,
That God's Heart would too easily melt!
He didn't know that The Lord of All
Had so much Love that He felt!
Jonah is like us all, in a way: First we don't take God at His Word and obey.
Instead, we try to just run away!
When in the end, we do what He asked, and sinners repent and fast -
We fail to rejoice at the sinners' great choice to turn away from their past!
Though it should not be, we would want to see - judgment on His people cast -
forgetting that God places
Grace above Law,
for His Mercy and Love are so VAST

which appears something like IXOYE. It's usage came out of the early Roman Empire when Christians were persecuted for their faith in Christ. The drawing of the fish symbol in the sand became the secret way for one Christian to identify himself to another Christian.
