He [FRANK HUGHES.FTW] [Donna Wood Taylor.FTW] Oscar was a farmer all his life. His father, James Henry Hughes, came from Boone County, Arkansas. Oscar married Ruth May Bryan and her brother Fred Jennings Bryan married Oscar's sister, Rena Belle Hughes. Oscar and Ruth and their seven children operated a farm and a dairy on the James Henry Hughes farm which is south and east of Coweta, just south of Highway 51B. He received an award and trip one year for his prize winning corn crop. The Hughes home was the site in the late 1940's and 1950's of many large and happy family gatherings. July 4th celebrations were of special note. Home-made ice cream, cakes of all sorts and fried chicken with all the trimmings were a delight for the children and adults as well. There was a huge cedar tree in the front yard of the Oscar Hughes home. The limbs were just perfect climbing rungs for the children to perch upon - sometimes there would be perhaps a dozen kids playing in that one giant tree. Sadly for the whole family, the original Oscar Hughes home was excavated by grandson Randy Swartwood when he built a lovely two story home on the site; however, the cedar tree still stands and was in wonderful health the last time I visited in 1997.

She worked with her sister, Eva in her furniture store in Tulsa, along with her brother Barney. During World War II she and her husband, Fred worked at Douglas Aircraft. She and her husband, Fred opened a restaurant in near west Tulsa near 21st and SW Boulevard known as RENA'S HOME COOKING. They retired on Ft. Gibson Lake near Tahlequah, Ok. in Pettit Bay. It was a fun place for all the children and grandchildren to vacation. There would be wall-to-wall sleeping bags inside the two-bedroom/one bathroom home, and tents were set up outside on special occassions for the married children. One night there were three tents outside when a near tornado with winds and rain hitting so hard you could hardly see. It was added fun for all except those who didn't stick it out and tried to run for the house. Rena and Fred had their 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration there at the lake with a very large gathering. Rena left the lake after Fred died during a triple bypass heart operation in Tulsa. She moved in with her sister Eva. Her son Arvel, died at age 50 with a ruptured artery in the liver. Her daughter, Irma Lee died at the age of 63, not recovering from a bypass heart operation and Rena died of heart troubles at home, aged 87. She loved to play cards and to teach the grandchildren. She was always concerned with all her children's and grandchildren's problems, and talked at length about anyone's illness. We would get her to stop by saying, 'let's play cards'. (Author - Bob Bryan, son of Rena). She was also known as Bryan.

The property was purchased in 1920 by Henry F. Taylor from a Creek Indian named Berry ?Carter.
