How to change your resolution and color depth

For Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0

Changing your resolution

  1. Bring up the Display properties dialog:

With all windows minimized, use the right mouse button to click your desktop and then click on properties from the pop-up menu. (Probably the last item)

    OR

    1. Double click the My Computer icon on your desktop.
    2. Double click on the control panel icon within the My Computer window.
    3. Double click on the Display icon within the control panel window.

  2. On the Display Properties dialog, click on the Settings tab.
  3. The Desktop Area section with the sliding ruler is how to change the resolution. You can click on the right side of the indicator to increase to the next resolution size your monitor allows.
  4. Clicking on OK will bring up a message box informing you the display will be resized in test mode. Click OK for this and make sure you like the new resolution. You can still cancel after this so don't worry.
  5. You will see what your screen will look like at this new resolution and get another message box asking you if you want to keep the new resolution or go back to the old setting. If you like it, click OK.
Note: Your monitor and display adapter determine whether you can change your screen resolution.

Changing the number of colors your monitor displays

  1. Bring up the Display properties dialog (see instructions above)
  2. In the Color Palette list, click the number of colors that you want your monitor to display. More memory is used for more colors but the difference can be worth the price!

Windows 95 is the platform I use (at 1024x768) so that is why these are the only instructions. If you use a different platform and wish to send me the instructions, I'd be happy to add them here.
