It was a big house with two bedrooms downstairs and three up. My two daughters shared a room on the main floor, and my room was there as well. Upstairs slept my 5 sons. I had little time, but ran up the stairs to awaken the boys, then back down to get the girls. Three of the boys ran past me as I went into the girls room. Two panicked and stayed upstairs.

I kept telling them everything was on fire and they could make it down the stairs and out the door if they just hurried. One daughter ran out the door, the other I couldn't find. I thought I saw two figures go by me as I finally found my other daughter and literally tossed her out the door.

The place exploded as I left the porch. Once outside, I could only account for 6 of the children and headed back in, but neighbors held me back.

I noticed a man had my other children sitting on a curb across from the burning house and was talking calmly to them. Soon the fire department was there and because the flames were going out toward my car parked on the street they began to move it. Out of the back popped up the son I couldn't find. After hugging him with relief, I sat on the curb and cried.

The man who was keeping the other children calm left the scene. No one knew who he was and I didn't think about him again until I went back into the building a few days later.

As I wandered through the charred ruins I found some amazing things. Each child had one treasured possession that was untouched by the fire or heat. I even had a little case with cards, stories, and things like the first lost tooth from each of the children.

I later learned each item was something the kids had talked to the mystery man about. It seems during his conversation with them he said he was sorry they were losing so much and asked what they would miss most.

Who was he?

I never found out. Was he sent to protect us and the things most important to some innocent hearts?
