SOUND OF SILENCE![]()
Since we had electronic equipment for live music and kareoke fun, I decided to look for the origin of this irritating sound there. Checking each piece of equipment was no help. The sound seemed to be everywhere ...permeating the air. I began to turn knobs, press buttons, and flip switches. Nothing... the sound continued. I was perplexed as I scanned the room and watched the merriment around me. My friends and co-workers were still engaged in lively conversation, and here I was trying to find a sound no one seemed to be aware of but me. I began to wonder if I was actually hearing the noise or if I was having a problem with my ears -- sorta like ringing -- except it was a buzz. My attention turned back to the electronic equipment as I now began to disconnect any cord or wire that could be disconnected. Unplugging and plugging each of them in various sequences. Nothing ...the sound continued. By now I was highly agitated and would do anything to find the source of the sound. No longer thinking like a rational human being, I grabbed a pair of scissors out of a nearby drawer and started poking, picking or clipping at anything that I thought might be the culprit filling my mind with this aggravating noise. Nothing..... the sound continued. Unable to contain my irritation any longer, I turned to my guests and screamed, "Doesn't anyone hear that horrible buzzing noise?" There was a brief moment of silence as all eyes turned on me. I noticed their bewildered stares and was very grateful when one of them walked over to me and said, "I think it's coming from down the hall, not in here." Down the hall? But down the hall was my home office, the guestroom and my room. I listened for a moment and discovered he was right. That noise was coming from down the hall. Walking down the hall I eliminated my office and the guestroom as the source of the sound. That left my room. As I entered my room...... I woke up enough to reach over and hit the off button on the alarm clock. I had found the source of that irritating noise. I also found it had been buzzing for over an hour. My guess is my subconscious had decided I needed a little more sleep and masked the wake up call in the activities of a dream. Ahhhh, nothing like the sound of silence!
