Samuel Vaughan

Samuel Vaughan was born about 1735 in Virginia. He was the son of William T. Vaughan and possibly Julia Green. Samuel died in December 1797 in Washington Co., Kentucky, and was buried at Bradfordsville, Kentucky. He married Prudence Hood about 1760 in Virginia. She was born about 1740 and was the daughter of William Hood and Margaret __________. Prudence died about 28 October 1833 in Washington Co., Kentucky. They had 13 children:

2. Mary ("Polly") Vaughan, born about 1769
3. Luke Vaughan, born 1772, died 1846
4. William Vaughan, born about 1775, died 8 March 1830
5. Ladicia ("Dicey") Vaughan, born 29 December 1776, died 9 January 1870
6. Claiborne Vaughan, born 1779, died 1834
7. Samuel Vaughan, born about 1780, died 1832
8. Chesley Vaughan, born before 1780, died after 1845
9. Joel Vaughan, born 1780, died before 19 May 1849
10. Peter Vaughan, born 1787, died 25 July 1831
11. John Vaughan, born 1788, died April 1830
12. Sally Vaughan, born 1793, died 18 July 1853
13. Elizabeth ("Betsy") Vaughan, born after 1793 in Virginia


The Will of Samuel Vaughan dated 9 October 1797 in Washington Co., Kentucky was probated 2 January 1798. It appears in Book A, Page 107 and reads as follows:

Samuel Vaughan, being very sick and weak in body, etc. . . I give and bequeath to Prudence my dearly beloved wife all of my estate together with all of my household goods, debts and moveable effects. Only figures I desire be sold, and if she marries I lend negro named Jenny and a negro named Lewis a horse. I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Dise eighteen pounds in property. I give and bequeath to my son Luke, eighteen pounds in property. I give and bequeath to my son John the pot mare's colt and saddle, a cow and calf, a two year old heifer and eighteen pounds in property. I give and bequeath to my son Joel a horse at fifteen pounds price in trade and saddle, a cow and calf, and a two year old heifer and eighteen pounds in property. I give and bequeath to my son Samuel a horse at fifteen pounds price in trade and saddle, a cow and calf, a two year old heifer and eighteen pounds or property. I give and bequeath to my son Chesley a horse at fifteen pounds in trade and saddle, a cow and calf, a two year old heifer and eighteen pounds in trade. I give and bequeath to my son Peter a horse at fifteen pounds price and saddle, a cow and calf, a two year old heifer and eighteen pounds in trade. I give and bequeath to my daughter a feather bed, and furniture, a cow and calf, and two year old heifer and eighteen pounds in trade. I give and bequeath to my daughter Betsy a feather bed and furniture, a cow and calf, and a two year old heifer and eighteen pounds in trade. Figures to be sold next Spring and a twelve months credit given. And at the descretion of my wife the balance of my estate to be divided amongst all my children equally. That is, naming them, Patty, William, Polly, Claburn, Luke, Dise, John, Joel, Sam.
