HELP WANTED

Girl Scout Troop 23 (The Dalles) is looking for decorations for their winter prom event to be held in January. They need items or decorations from each decade…30’s 50’s, 60’s, etc. They are especially looking for some of those life-size cardboard cut-outs of celebrities to borrow. They need them to use for their dance photos! Some other things they could use are:

  • Posters of old cars, celebrities or advertising
  • Old dance photos & souvenirs (photocopies)
  • School banners, ribbons or pennants
  • Hula-hoops and “Twister” games

If you have items to loan call Becki at (541) 442-5000. Their event is on Saturday, January 15th, so time is of the utmost consideration!

    Last Month’s Contest

Did anyone besides Carol J even see this?:
How many double words are there there in this newsletter? The first correct answer to the Editor will get something special at next month’s meeting.

By default Carol is the winner! She was the ONLY person to even contact me, and although her guess had only ½ of the answers, it was still the only guess by ANYONE!

If you would like to know the answer you can either :
A – Talk to Carol and ask her what her guess was and then double it.
    ~ OR ~
B – Pull out last month’s newsletter and count them yourself.

The Thinking Day symbol was introduced in 1975. The World Trefoil in the centre represents the World Association, whilst arrows pointing towards it represent action and direction. The circular design represents the World of the Girl Guide/Girl Scout Movement.

    Quilt Project For Girls

The New Moon Magazine for girls is appealing to Girl Scouts across the country to join girls from around the world in a millennium quilt project. Girls are requested to make squares that celebrate girls and women of the past, present, and future. Each square contributed will become a part of a millennium quilt that will tour the country.

For individual quilt square designs, girls can choose any of the following subjects:

    Entry Requirements

Theme: Girls and Women of the Past, Present, and Future

Deadline for submitting a square: May 1, 2000

Square size: 13 inches by 13 inches

Required border: Leave a blank half-inch border around the edge of the square. This border will be sewn into the seam, and any part of the design within that border will be lost.

Size of final design: 12 inches by 12 inches, with a design centered on the square, and a blank half-inch seam allowance on all sides.

Fabric for the square: 100 percent cotton (No other fabrics will be accepted.)

Materials: markers, paint, attached fabrics, embroidery—anything you can imagine!

Do: Put a title or description on your square to let people know what the square is about. Check out the many library quilt books, the Internet, or current museum quilt exhibits for inspiration.

    Mail finished quilt squares to:
Millennium Quilt, New Moon, P.O. Box 3620, Duluth, Minn. 55803-3620. Also include name, age, street address, e-mail address, and telephone number.

    Council Quotes

The deadline for council adult recognition nominations is February 11. All nominations and letters of reference are due at the Girl Scout Office then. Nomination forms and explanations of the awards can be found in the G.R.E.A.T. Guide on pages 101-103. Consider which Girl Scout leaders could be nominated for the Outstanding Leader award; this award is often overlooked.

Watch your mailboxes for the Summer Program Brochure, which will arrive in February. One will be mailed to each household of a registered Girl Scout.

The Girl Scout Office & Shop will be closed January 17 for Martin Luther King Day and February 21 for Presidents Day.

Non-member insurance must be purchased for anyone attending a Girl Scout event who is not currently registered as a Girl Scout. Call the Membership Registrar at the Girl Scout Office a month before the event to purchase the insurance.

Safety-Wise reminder: When you are going on an overnight trip/event there must be at least two adults present. This is to provide a backup in case something happens to the primary adult. Both adults must know where all emergency documentation is kept, and be aware of the emergency plan for the particular site/situation that they are in. G.R.E.A.T. Guide events are no exception to this rule. Accommodations can be made for G.R.E.A.T. Guide events in some circumstances by calling Membership Support (503) 598-6546 or 1-800-338-5248 at least one month in advance of the event.

“Be Your Best” week and Girl Scout week are March 11-17. Remind Girl Scout Leaders of G.R.E.A.T. Guide and Neighborhood events that they can participate in.

Keep track of Girl Scout troop expenses now to make the end of the year financial report easier to complete.

    SHOP NOTES

February 22 is Thinking Day, a great time to give out the World Association Pin to your Girl Scout Troop.

The fall of 1997 five new Brownie Try-It’s, one Junior badge and one Cadette/Senior Interest Project Patch were added to the appropriate age level books. Some confusion has arisen because although the requirements were added to the books, the indexes were not updated to reflect the changes.

    G.R.E.A.T. GUIDE UPDATE

The Discovery Zone after Dark events scheduled for February 5 for Junior Girl Scouts and February 12 for Brownie Girl Scouts has been cancelled. Discovery Zone is no longer in business in Vancouver.

In order to make the Girl Scouts Celebrate event, originally planned for April 15, even more spectacular and easy for all to attend, you can now look for it to be a part of our exciting council-wide encampment. If you would like to get involved and share your input, contact Heather Law at (503) 568-6517 or 1-800-338-5248.

The date for Encampment 2000 – “Footprints in Time” has been changed to September 8-9-10, 2000. The location is Camp Namanu south of Sandy. A variety of program options will be available for all age levels, including overnight and day programs. Watch future publications for more information.

The time and place for the Dream Dessert Creation contest have changed. The new location will be Oregon Episcopal School dining room. The event will begin at 2:00 p.m. and end at 3:30 p.m. If you are registered for this event, watch your mailbox for an information letter with driving directions and other specifics on the event.
