Well, as I said in the beginning, Dad had announced that California was our destination. I know that Mom and Dad kept telling me in Yosemite National Park, "Cookie, you're in California now!" but I didn't think California was just a big park (and Yosemite is a BIG park.) After all, my best friends Kathy and Mike live in California and they weren't at the park.

When we left Yosemite we first drove to see the Don Pedro Dam. This is where Dad spent some time when he was a "boy engineer"--which was a very long time ago, I think. Then we drove through San Franciso where Mom went to graduate school "a million years ago" and across the
Golden Gate Bridge.

We finally arrived at Mill Valley where we stayed with Patty and Chris. They have a dog named Casey who is sort of like me but she is only a Labrador retriever, while I am many things. Casey was staying somewhere called "Doggie Club Med" because Patty and Chris had been out of town. Still, I learned a lot about her by smelling her house. I hope to meet her in person some day. She sent me a picture of herself (Casey). Who do you think is prettier? (We are both girl dogs, you know.)
After a few days we left Mill Valley and drove south along Highway 1, near the ocean. We stopped in Monterey so Mom and Dad could go the Aquarium. I had to bide my time in the van but Dad parked inside so it was cool and dark. It gave me time to take a much needed nap.
Then we drove along the
Pacific Coast Highway
, high up above the ocean and the rocks. When we went through
Big Sur
it was pretty foggy and Mom was scared. I helped Dad drive by using special dog navigation. Eventually we got to San Simeon. Mom and Dad decided to go to Hearst Castle, which is one more place that doesn't let dogs in. I'm sure Mr. Hearst had a dog so I don't understand.
From there it was a fairly short drive to Ranch Palos Verdes where my friends Kathy and Mike live. We stayed at their house for almost a week and it was pretty exciting. I took my first ride in a convertible.

We went to a July 4th picnic and I tried to join the dog parade but I got kicked-out. They said it was because I did not belong to some fancy club, but I know they were just jealous because I was the coolest dog there.

It was in California that I learned to wear a hat

We had parties and I danced with Mike.
Finally we had to leave early one morning and start back to Michigan. I was afraid that my adventures were over but there were more to come.
