Barbara Holborow was a
Children's Court magistrate in Sydney for 12 years, and also worked as a solicitor
specializing in young people's cases before being appointed to the Bench in 1982.
Barbara spent a good part of her magisterial career presiding over the toughest children's
courts, where every day she viewed life as few people have witnessed it. She saw the
abused and the abusers, the pathetic, the humorous and the tragic. She had great
moments and terrible moments, dealing not only with children, but also with the adults who
were their parents, their protectors, their friends and ultimately their enemies.
Barbara despaired at the inadequacy of the justice system as it related to children, but
fought to bring about changes, and is proud of her achievements. Since retiring, Barbara
was appointed as Patron for the Hope for the Children Foundation.
In 1997 Barbara released her first book, Those Tracks on My Face, which has sold
almost 20,000 copies and is currently in its fifth edition. In April 1999 she released her
second book "Kids - Loving for life".
Barbara was the Club's special guest speaker on
27th April 1999. Over 160 guests and members attended the dinner. A cheque for $7,500 was
presented to Barbara Holborow for the Hope for the Children Foundation.
