I love how a scripture will just SPARKLE out, like a diamond, as one is reading along. Recently I was reading in Deuteronomy when a Truth almost jumped off the page at me!
Ask yourself, why does the Lord want us to get hungry (a downright uncomfortable feeling) before we eat? At times I had wondered that. But in Deut. 8, beginning with verse 2, God was explaining to the Israelites why He allowed them to go hungry. Recall how they were to the point of rebellion, complaining because they were missing the foods back in Egypt. Listen to these verses from the NIV
v.2 "Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, TO HUMBLE YOU AND TO TEST YOU IN ORDER TO KNOW WHAT WAS IN YOUR HEART, WHETHER OR NOT YOU WOULD KEEP HIS COMMANDS. v.3 He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of
the Lord. v.4 Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years. v.5 KNOW THEN IN YOUR HEART THAT AS A MAN DISCIPLINES HIS SON, SO THE LORD YOUR GOD DISCIPLINES YOU.
I couldn't help but remember some of the best teachers I had throughout my school years. When they gave a test, it was not to punish or torment us, but to help us see the areas where we still needed to learn more.
So hunger, like any difficulty in life, can be looked upon as a concrete evidence of God's love. (a blessing!) Would He care what is within our hearts if He didn't love us greatly? God's discipline is always a loving/teaching experience. What better way could He get us to humble ourselves, to stop depending upon our own resources and "willpower" and instead, to look to Him for true strength?
