The Father gazed at the face of the infant and whispered, "You are my child. I will always love you, no matter what." The sleeping child sighed and wriggled slightly, as if he had heard the quiet words, and then settled back into deep sleep. The Father moved away, but did not leave the room.
The child grew and the Father stayed close by and often whispered quietly, "You are my child. I will always love you, no matter what." The child accepted the Father's comforting presence without question. It seem natural and right and good to know the Father. He accepted the knowledge that the beauty of trees and sky and birds and stars were gifts from the Father.
But the child grew older, and the Father's gifts lost their luster and the inventions of people began to overshadow the wonder of the Father's creation, and the Father's voice. More and more the Father's quiet words went unheard, but sometimes, not often, the child sensed a comforting presence that spoke softly of love and acceptance.
As the child reached adolescence, the Father remained close by and continued to whisper, but the child did not hear Him at all. There were so many sights and sounds and experiences that demanded his attention and the soft voice of the Father was lost in the din. He raced toward life full speed, finding excitement and satisfaction in the things he could see and smell and touch.
The race carried him into adulthood and the din continued unabated. He sought to fill his life with friends and family and money and power, and he was sure that if he just kept seeking these things, he would feel secure and accepted. But he did not. He felt lonely in the midst of people who surrounded him.
One day he just stopped. He looked around at the life he had built and knew it was never going to give him what he wanted. He felt the futility of his striving for peace and self worth, for love and acceptance in any of the things surrounding him. He was empty.
Then, in the emptiness, he heard something, barely a whisper. He became still and strained to hear the sound. "You are my child," he heard. "I will always love you, no matter what." He recognized the soft whisper of the Father and knew where he could find the love and acceptance he needed so desperately. His heart turned toward the voice and replied, "You are my Father. I am your child."
