Roster - First Company
All members of each Company of the Washington Artillery were required to supply certain basic information. In addition to their names, they also normally provided their occupations and their places of birth, as well as their marital status. Included on these pages with the rosters for the Washington Artillery are some of the pertinent rank and service notes. Unless noted as married, the men were unmarried at the time of membership.
All listings are in alphabetical order.
Officers
Brown, CHC - 20 years old, born in Louisiana, he worked as a clerk at the time he joined. He held the rank of Sergeant; was promoted to 1st Sergeant in October 1861; and finally promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in May 1864. He was wounded so severely that he was left behind on the field at the Battle of Gettysburg, where he was captured by Federal troops who sent him to the prisoner-of-war camp at Johnson's Island, Ohio. From Johnson's Island, Ohio, he was paroled and exchanged at City Point, Virginia on March 16, 1864. A sutler's receipt was issued at Point Lookout Prison Camp that remains as a part of their records; issued on March 1, 1864 to Lieutenant Brown, listing his regiment as "Louisiana, Washington Artillery Co., 1st".
Case, F. F. - 23 years old, born in Alabama, his civilian occupation was as a clerk. He held the rank of Corporal until he was returned to the ranks at his own request in October 1861. However, he was later promoted to Corporal again, this time in April 1863, and later was promoted to Sergeant in October 1864.
Dupuy, CLC - 30 years old, and worked as a clerk at the time of his joining. He held the rank of Sergeant, and was promoted to Sergeant Major in May 1861.
Fellowes, William, Jr. - 26 years old, born in Kentucky, his civilian occupation was as a clerk. He held the rank of Corporal until he was returned to the ranks at his own request in August 1861.
Galbraith, John M. - 21 years of age, born in Tennessee, his civilian occupation was that of a clerk. He held the rank of Sergeant until he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in November 1861. He would be promoted to 1st Lieutenant in December 1863. Galbraith died in May 1864 of a wound received at the Battle of Drewry's Bluff.
Geiger, H.G. - Married, he held the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He was detailed to the Quartermaster Department.
Isaacson, Harry M. - Married, he held the rank of Captain. He resigned in August 1861.
Owen, Edward - 25 years old, born in Ohio, brother of William Miller Owen, his civilian occupation was as a bookkeeper. He was promoted from 1st Sergeant to 1st Lieutenant in September 1861, and then to Captain in January 1864. He was wounded at the Battle of Sharpsburg and at the Battle of Drewry's Bluff. After the War, Edward Owen and General James Longstreet would become business partners.
Payne, E.C., Jr. - 24 years old, his civilian occupation was as a clerk. He held the rank of Corporal until he was promoted to 2nd Sergeant in October 1861. He was disharged in February 1862.
Richardson, John B. - He held the rank of 1st Lieutenant, and was later promoted to the rank of Captain and assigned to 2nd Company in June 1862.
Ruggles, Frank D. - 24 years old, born in Mississippi, his civilian occupation was that of a clerk. Holding the rank of Corporal, Ruggles was killed at the Battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862.
Squires, Charles W. - He held the rank of 1st Lieutenant, and was promoted to Captain in September 1861 after the resignation of Captain Isaacson. In June 1862 he was assigned to 2nd Company. He was promoted to the rank of Major of Artillery in the Provisional Army of the Confederate States of America in January 1864.

Aby, Thomas Y. - 22 years old, born in Mississippi, his civilian occupation was as a clerk. He was promoted to Corporal in October 1861, and then to Sergeant - also in October 1861. In July 1862, he was promoted to 1st Sergeant, and finally to Assistant Surgeon in February 1863.
Allain, H.L. - 20 years old, born in New York, his civilian occupation was as a mechanic. He enlisted in Jackson.

Alsobrook, R.H. - 16 years old, born in Alabama, his civilian occupation was as a student. Alsobrook was severely wounded when he was blown up on a caisson in Maryland in September 1862.
