Roster - Third Company
All members of each Company of the Washington Artillery were required to supply certain basic information. In addition to their names, they also provided their occupations and their places of birth, as well as their marital status. Included on these pages with the rosters for the Washington Artillery are some of the pertinent rank and service notes.

Adam, Louis A. - 2nd Lieutenant; resigned in August 1861. He re-enlisted as a private in August 1862.
Avril, E. - Corporal; wounded at Sharpsburg in September 1862; discharged in December 1862.

Brewer, Isaac W. - a 1st Lieutenant, he was killed at Rappahannock Station.

Collins, W.A. - Sergeant; wounded at Manassas in August 1863.
Coyle, W.G. - Sergeant.
Dearing, James - born in Campbell County, Virginia on April 35, 1840, he was the great-grandson of Colonel Charles Lynch of Revolutionary War fame (the same man who gave his name to what came to be known as "lynch law"). Appointed as a cadet to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he resigned his place there as soon as Virginia's secession was announced and their participation in the Southern Confederacy was made known. Returning home, he enlisted in the Provisional Army of the Confederate States. He was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant, and attached to the Washington Artillery; promoted to Captain of Artillery on April 8, 1862, he took command of a battery attached to General Pickett's Division. As a Lieutenant and a Captain, he participated in the principal battles of the army of Northern Virginia until after Chancellorsville when he was promoted to Major, when he received command over an 18-cannon battalion in the reserve artillery of Longstreet's Corps.

Garnet, J.J. - 1st Lieutenant; assigned to Company in July 1861; promoted to Major of Artillery in 1862.
Grimmer, A.E. - Corporal; wounded at Fredericksburg in December 1862.
Handy, John T. - 1st Sergeant; captured at Fredericksburg in May 1863.
Hero, Andrew Jr. - 2nd Sergeant in May 1861; promoted to 1st Sergeant in November 1861, and then to 2nd Lieutenant in May 1862. He became a 1st Lieutenant in August 1862, and Captain in February 1864. He was wounded at Sharpsburg in September 1862, and at Petersburg in April 1865.

Kremelberg, F. - Sergeant; killed at Petersburg in July 1864.
Leefe, W. - Corporal; he died in a Louisiana hospital.
Many, R.P. - Corporal; killed at Fredericksburg in May 1863.

Andress, Stephen Singleton - born in Louisiana and a
resident of New Orleans, Louisiana at the time of enlistment, his occupation was
as a student at the time of enlistment; he was 17 years old and single.
Enlisted as a Private at Camden, Alabama on December 5, 1863. Present on Roll to June, 1864. Roll for July
and August, 1864 indicated that he was "Absent, sick, Since July 20th,
1864"; the roll for September and October 1864 stated that he was "Present. Returned to Co., Oct. 13th, 1864, from Absence,
Sick". He was present for roll for January and February, 1865.
He was paroled at Farmville, Virginia from April 11th to 21st, 1865. He had been
present for the following engagements: Kingsland Creek (near Drewry’s Bluff)
on May 13th, 1864; at Drewry’s Bluff from May 14th to 15th, 1864; Petersburg,
Virginia in June 1864; Petersburg, Virginia in October 1864; Petersburg,
Virginia in November 1864; Petersburg, Virginia in December 1864; Petersburg,
