Roster - Fourth Company
All members of each Company of the Washington Artillery were required to supply certain basic information. In addition to their names, they also provided their occupations and their places of birth, as well as their marital status. Included on these pages with the rosters for the Washington Artillery are some of the pertinent rank and service notes.
All listings are in alphabetical order.
Officers
Adams, Charles L. - Corporal; he was promoted and discharged in 1863.
Ames, Fred W. - a Corporal, he was listed as absent on furlough from December 28, 1864.
Apps, George Edward ("Ed" or "Ned") - enlisted as a Sergeant in May 1861, he later was promoted to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in 1861, and became a 1st Lieutenant in 1862. His female friend (and sister of his friend, Fred Brode, who was a Private in 4th Company), Josephine Brode Trinchard (married at age 16 to F.B. Trinchard who would in 1863 join Company E, 2nd Battalion Alabama Artillery), saved a number of Apps' letters to her; the letters are presently in the collections of the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia.
Babcock, O.S. - Corporal.
Banksmith, Ansel - Sergeant; wounded at Fredericksburg in 1862.
Battles, H.A. - 2nd Lieutenant in 1861, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in 1862, and was wounded at Fredericksburg.
Behan, W.J. - 1st Sergeant in 1861, he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in 1863.
Brodie, Fred A. - Corporal.
Burke, R.S. - Corporal.
Dearies, James W. - Sergeant in 1862; discharged.
Eshleman, B.F. - Captain in 1861; he was wounded at Bull Run, and promoted to Major in 1862.
Fish, John S. - a Sergeant in 1861, he was promoted to 1st Sergeant in 1863.
Gray, R.H. - Sergeant in 1861.
Haile, Sylvester T. - Quartermaster Sergeant.
Hufft, Bernard - a Corporal, he was wounded at Gettysburg in July 1863.
Lescene, Joseph W. - a Corporal, he was wounded at Gettysburg in July 1863; captured by the enemy; and appointed as a Cadet in 1864.
Lewis, L.L. - a Corporal, he was mortally wounded at Chancellorsville.
Lilly, James F. - Corporal.
McDonald, R.G. - a Corporal, he was killed at Drewry's Bluff in 1864.
Montgomery, George - Corporal.
Moore, Robert F.F. - Sergeant in 1861.
Norcom, Joseph - 28 years old, born in North Carolina, his civilian occupation was as a clerk. Enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant and rising to command of 4th Company as Captain in 1862, he was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863.
Reynolds, Joshua D. - a Sergeant in 1861, he was killed at Manassas in 1861.
Stewart, T. Jones - a Sergeant, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant of Cavalry in 1864.
Valentine, John B. - Sergeant; wounded at Drewry's Bluff in 1864.

Wood, John C. - a Corporal who was promoted to Sergeant in 1861, he was wounded at Fredericksburg in 1862 and discharged.

Cowand, Charles - born December 13, 1846 in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi; died December 31, 1917 and buried in the Cowand Cemetery in Bay St. Louis. He married Helena Dorhauer after the War, on January 16, 1867. He enlisted May 6, 1961 in New Orleans; was present on all rolls up to and including April 1865. He was wounded twice; he was wounded once when a shell exploded and it tore away the palm of his right hand, leaving his middle finger stiff and bent.

Haile, Sylvester T. - enlisted as a private, and promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant in April 1863. He was listed as absent sick in the hospital at Petersburg from November 1863 to February 1864, during which time he evidently visited Louisiana (serving as a courier to take letters home for Fred Brode). He was again absent sick from August 28, 1864 through February 1865.

Martin, William - 26 years old, born in New Orleans, Louisiana, his civilian occupation was as a carpenter. Transferred into 4th Company from the 16th Mississippi Infantry, he was wounded at the Battle of Drewry's Bluff on May 16, 1864; and returned to Louisiana where he took the oath of allegiance to the Federal government.

McDonald, John - captured at Gettysburg in July 1863, he died of smallpox at Fort Delaware.

Peek, Henry Thomas - joined at Culpepper Courthouse in Virginia July 1, 1863 and served through out the war until captured April 9, 1865. He is listed in the Louisiana records as Henry Peak; in William Miller Owen's In Camp and Battle With the Washington Artillery of New Orleans he is listed as H.T. Peck. The National Archives has him as both H.T. Peek and H.T. Peak. The muster rolls of 4th Company, copies of which were obtained by our contributor from the Jackson Barracks, list him as Henry Peek, although the handwriting is somewhat open to interpretation.
