Roster - Second Company

All members of each Company of the Washington Artillery were required to supply certain basic information.  In addition to their names, they also provided their ages, occupations, and their places of birth, as well as marital status.  Included on these pages with the rosters for the Washington Artillery are some of the pertinent rank and service notes. 

All listings are in alphabetical order.

Brinsmade, A.A.  -  1st Sergeant; promoted to 2nd Lieutenant of Artillery.

Britton, J.D.  -  2nd Lieutenant; wounded at Sharpsburg in September 1862.

Chalaron, Stephen  -  wounded at Gettysburg in July 1863, he was captured and exchanged.  He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in Nit. and Min. Bureau in May 1864.

Clagett, Philip A.  -  present at the surrender at Appomatox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865.

Craig, Leonard  -  an Artificer, he was present at the surrender at Appomatox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865.

DeGrange, Joseph H.  -  1st Sergeant in 1861.

DeMeza, Joseph  -  a Quartermaster Sergeant, he was present at the surrender at Appomatox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865.

Dempsey, John W.  -  an Artificer, he was transferred from 3rd Company, and then transferred back to 3rd Company in June 1863.

DeRussy, George B. - 32 years old, born in Louisiana, married, his civilian occupation was as a clerk.  He was promoted to Sergeant in 1st Company in October 1861, to 2nd Lieutenant in July 1862, and was transferred to 2nd Company.  He was wounded at Fredericksburg in May 1863.

Edwards, James D.  - a Corporal, he was discharged in December 1861.

Emmett, J.W.  -  appointed 1st Lieutenant of the Provisional Army of the Confederate States in July 1863 by the Secretary of War.

Fuqua, Thomas H.  -  a Sergeant, he was present at the surrender at Appomatox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865.

Goodwin, John Howard  -  wounded at Drewry's Bluff in May 1864; he was promoted to Ordnance Sergeant in June 1864.

Hall, Edward L.  -  promoted to Sergeant in August 1863, he was wounded at Williamsport, Maryland in July 1863.

Hare, Walter J.  -  a Sergeant, he was wounded at Sharpsburg.   He was present at  the surrender at Appomatox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865.

Hawes, Samuel  -  promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in November 1861; promoted to 1st Lieutenant in December 1861.

Humphries, G.W.  -  present at the surrender at Appomatox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865.

Hutton, B.N.L.  -  discharged in July 1861 by order of General Beauregard.

Huchez, C.  -  Sergeant.

Jewell, E.J.  -  wounded at Williamsport, Maryland on July 6, 1863, he died at Williamsport on July 19, 1863.

Keating, James  -  an artificer, he was transferred from 3rd Company, and was present at the surrender at Appomatox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865.

Knight, A.G.  -  a 1st Sergeant in 1862, he was present at the surrender at Appomatox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865.

Leverich, Charles E.  -  Sergeant; appointed 1st Lieutenant of the Provisional Army of the Confederate States in July 1863 by order of the Secretary of War.

Lewis, C.C.  -  Lieutenant, commanding the company in May 1861.   He resigned in August 1861.

McPherson, Samuel J.  -  1st Lieutenant; resigned in August 1861.

Meyers, S. Isaac  -  killed at Petersburg in August 1864.

Parsons, John W.  -  captured at Gettysburg on July 5, 1863, he was exchanged.  He was promoted to Sergeant in November 1863.

Patton, E.D.  -  present at the surrender at Appomatox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865.

Randolph, J.F.  -  transferred from 3rd Company, he was present at the surrender at Appomatox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865.

Randolph, W.A.  -  Sergeant; promoted to Sergeant Major in September 1863.

Richardson, John B. - He held the rank of 1st Lieutenant in 1st Company, and was later promoted to the rank of Captain and assigned to 2nd Company in June 1862.   He was wounded at Bull Run.

Rosser, Thomas Lafayette  -  born in Campbell County, Virginia on October 15, 1836; the family removed from Virginia to Texas in 1849, where Rosser was appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1856.   The course of study at the USMA at West Point then being five years, he was in the graduating class of 1861 when it was ordered into the field by President Lincoln.   He immediately resigned, and moved to Montgomery, Alabama where he was commissioned First Lieutenant in the Provisional Army of the Confederate States.  Assigned to be the instructor to the Washington Artillery of New Orleans during their assimilation into the army, he commanded the Second Company at the battles of Blackburn's Ford and Manassas in July, 1861; and with Stuart at Munson's Hill and the battle of Lewinsville. His success in shooting down McClellan's observation balloon won him promotion to Captain.   Wounded at Mechanicsville, he was shortly thereafter promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of Artillery, and a few days alter to Colonel over the 5th Virginia Regiment of Cavalry; and was promoted to Major-General in November, 1864.

Slocomb, Cuthbert H.  -  promoted to 1st Lieutenant; resigned in November 1861.

Strawbridge, George E.  -  appointed 2nd Lieutenant in the Provisional Army of the Confederate States in March 1863 by the Secretary of War.

Suter, Thomas H.  -  was present at the surrender at Appomatox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865.

Twichell, C.C.  -  wounded at Williamsport; he was promoted to Corporal in August 1863.

White, T.B.  -  promoted to Corporal in December 1861, he was discharged in November 1862 by the Secretary of War.

Wigfall, F.H.  -  a Cadet, he was relieved from duty with the company in June 1862 by Order No. 137.

Wood, H.C.  -  a Sergeant, he was discharged in October 1861 by order of the Secretary of War.

Woodville, John C.  -  present at the surrender at Appomatox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865.

Woodville, L.C.  -  promoted to Corporal in April 1863, he was wounded at Petersburg in June 1864.

Winter, Samuel Drew  -  a student at Virginia Military Institute, he was a member of the VMI graduating class of 1865, but only attended VMI for four-and-one-half months, never graduating. He was absent at the time of surrender; sick.  The photograph was taken around 1910; he died in 1916.
