"Even a single lamp dispels the darkness"--Mohatma Ghandi

Fred Cohen, President

Fred Cohen became associated with the Right-to-Die movement after witnessing the very bad deaths of several friends, and assumed the presidency of End of Life Choices' Delaware Valley Chapter in January, 1999.

Fred served as the CEO of TeleSciences, Inc., an electronics company which he started in a basement workshop with $1,500, and grew to employ almost a thousand workers, doing business in twenty seven countries and achieving a market capitalization of $100 million. For a number of years he was associated with the University of Pennsylvania as an Adjunct Professor. Fred played a major role in the creation of the school's Technical Entrepreneurship course, one of the highest rated classes in the university's history, and he continues to be a regularly featured guest lecturer there.

Since his retirement in 1993, has devoted himself to the management of his personal investment portfolio and to various eleemosynary projects. He has been a featured authority on special investment strategies at seminars of The American Institute of Individual Investors and The Philadelphia Area Computer Society.

Seymour Hernes, Vice President; Secretary

Seymour Hernes hails from New York city, and served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1947. He holds a B.B.A. degree from the City College of New York and received his Masters degree from Columbia University in 1951. Seymour served as the Vice President of Division of Gulf & Western Industries (now Viacom) until 1973, and as the Executive Vice President and Board of Directors member of TeleSciences, Inc. (now Marlton Technologies) until 1966. He currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Marlton Technologies.

As a close personal friend of Fred Cohen and supporter of the right to death with dignity, Seymour was asked to join Delaware Valley End of Life Choices' Board of Directors as Vice President and Secretary, and his input and experience are much appreciated by his fellow officers.

Deborah Woolson, Vice President; Media Relations Coordinator

Deborah Woolson is a Quality Assurance Product Analyst for a multi-media monitoring firm. Deb is no stranger to the field of politics, starting her activism at age 15. She was the was Assistant Director of DES Action/PA in the late 1970s, and was instrumental in the campaign of Pennsylvania Congressman Bob Edgar, serving as campaign photographer, volunteer coordinator, headquarters and phone bank Supervisor.

Deborah became involved in End of Life Choices after watching the deaths of her dear best friend and her mother from cancer. Both wanted the choice of when to end their suffering. Both had the same doctor, who did all she could within the confines of the law. Had the law been different, her mother and friend could have ended their journey on earth more quickly, and by their own choice. Deb's activism in the cause of death with dignity reflects her love and respect for those she has lost, in the hope that should she ever need that choice, the option will be available to her.

Deb is strongly committed to the cause of death with dignity, and has been instrumental in developing and continuing our chapter's outreach program. Because of her involvement, Chapter President Fred Cohen has conducted numerous speaking engagements, and been a guest on local radio and television talk shows.

Betsy Director, Treasurer; Newsletter Editor; Webmaster

Betsy Director is the Administrative Office Manager for an engineering firm. She brings to End of Life Choices a long history of activism. As a proud feminist and member of the pro-choice community, Betsy has served on the front lines of the battle for compassionate legislation and personal liberty. As the mother of two dogs and two cats, she believes that we should be able to afford our human loved ones the same dignity and compassion that the law allows us to show our pets when they are suffering. She is grateful for her and her loved ones' good health, but has witnessed suffering and wishes to secure for herself and the population at large the right to choose a death with dignity should that option be deemed appropriate.

Betsy serves as our Chapter Treasurer, newsletter editor and webmistress (I know that's not "PC" but I don't care. I like it!).
