Hi. My name is Karen.
From March to September, 2001, I hiked the Appalachian Trail, a 2,157 mile footpath stretching from Georgia to Maine. I walked to raise awareness and funds for Pathways-Life After Cancer. Pathways is a non-profit organization that offers counseling and community support to cancer patients and their families.
I walked the trail in memory of my Mom who died of brain cancer last summer. She was an elementary school guidance counselor in Milton, Wisconsin for over ten years.
Hiking the Appalachian Trail had been my dream since I started leading wilderness trips in Western North Carolina four years ago. When I graduated from Warren Wilson College in December 1999, I postponed my trek to provide physical and emotional support for Mom, sharing an irreplaceable six months with her.
By providing publicity and funds for Pathways-Life After Cancer, I hope to help other people find emotional support and improved quality of life throughout their illness.
My walk was sponsored by Pathways-Life After Cancer (email), the Key Center for Service-Learning at the University of North Carolina in Asheville, Warren Wilson College, Diamond Brand Outdoors, Sierra Designs, and people like you. If you would like to support this cause, please make a pledge.
