I was so far in my head last night that I forgot to write about what I'd seen. I watched two deer graze above a water source. They smelled me, then saw me, looked at me, and kept on grazing. I saw the forest floor laden with flowers so dense that I couldn't step without walking on lilies, snowflowers, irises, and violets. I crossed over Roan Mountain and stayed at Roan High Knon Shelter. At 6285' it's the highest shelter on the trail—only 3 feet lower than Mt Washington in NH. Tonight I'm in a shelter full of boys talking about Dana Delaney and the girl from Northern Exposure. The only saving grace is that Fiddler is playing beautiful music outside and I met Hummingbird, a woman who worked at Camp Manitowish in Northern WI where many of my friends from Rutabaga have worked.
