JV surprising many
With their record of 5-1, the Hillside JV boys have become a force to be reckoned with.  With the stellar leadership of such players as William Wright and Brandon Jones, Hillside has dominated such schools as Jordan, Riverside, and Orange.  They even fought back from a 12 point deficit against George Washington (VA) to tie up the game with 15 seconds left.  GW is one of the best public schools in Virginia so there is no doubt that this years squad is for real.
Look for the JV team to be a top contender for the Five County regular season

Hornets take well needed break
The Hornets of Hillside High School have had a tough year so far, with a no wins in their last five games and a 1-5 record overall, but hopefully all they need is some rest.  The Hornets have taken exams for the last 4 days and now have all of the winter break to recompose.
The Hornets first opponents are the Riverside Pirates, which came back from an 18 point deficit to beat Hillside.  During this break there will be no shortage of practice, however, as the Hornets plan to practice as much as possible.  With practices all of this week, the Hornets are ready to get back to playing.
Hillside will look upon such players as Robert Perry, Anthony Ifedi  and Kevin Sumner for their comeback of sorts.  These are their top scorers and will be a key factor.

Late rally proves not enough against ECH
Hillside High School entered Tuesday night's game 1-5 and going up against the #9 team, East Chapel Hill, in the region.  Blow out, right?  Wrong.  East Chapel Hill had a lead of 49-36 before Hillside went on an 13-0 run beginning at the 2:17 mark in the fourth quarter.  Hillside clawed its way back into the game and had a chance to win when Robert Perry stole the ball with time winding down.  Perry then took a mid range three pointer but it rimmed out.  The game then went on to overtime, in which the Hornets simply were beaten.  Hillside moves to 1-6 with a home conference game tonight, against Bartlett Yancey at 7:30.  Read more about the game...

Questions answered as Hornets pummel BYHS
To all those who had any doubts that the Hillside basketball squad of 2001-02 was for real, your questions have been answered.  The Hornets of Hillside High School broke out with a 78-42 win against Bartlett Yancy High Buccaneers.  The Hornets defense proved suffocating as the Hornets allowed only single digit totals against them as far as the second quarter.  Hillside was led by Robert Perry who put up 25 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Anthony Ifedi who scored 19.  Hillside was also assisted by two sophomores in Eric Richardson(10 points) and Brandon Alston(5 steals).  Hillside never gave the Bucs a ch2ance and put them away early.  At some points it looked as if the Hornets had the choice of what to do and the Bucs just watched.  The Hornets move to 1-1 in conference play and look to defend their conference crown against S. Alamance on Jan 11th.

Hillside heating up!
Robert Perry led all scorers with 25 points, as the home team Hornets stretched their win streak to 2 games with a win over S. Alamance Patriots, 89-50.  Perry hit five treys and Anthony Ifedi was second in scorers with 19.  Kevin Sumner and Brandon Alston thrilled the Hillside fans with several moves that left the Patriot defenders looking all over for the ball.  The Hornets dominated the opposing defense for the second game in a row and provided a suffocating defense that led to many turnovers.  This is a perfect time for the Hornets to get in their groove as the Hornets face George Washington and #4 Burlington Williams; two top level teams that will prove to be a very good test for the Hornets.  The Hornets move to 2-1 in conference play and 3-6 overall.

HORNETS UPSET #3 BURLINGTON WILLIAMS!!
At one point of Tuesday nights Williams/Hillside game, the Bulldogs of WHS had opened up their lead to a fifteen point margin.  But as teams have learned before, never count out the Hornets.  The Hornets clawed their way back into the game with stellar play from Hillside junior Kevin Sumner.  Sumner ignited the comeback with a thunderous dunk over Williams 7'1" center, Adam Simons.   Then with the assistance of key turnovers forced by Robert Perry, Sumner came down the court with a little more than a minute left in the fourth quarter and spotted up for a three that hit nothing but net.  The crowd went crazy.  This three would prove to be the dagger in the heart  for the Bulldogs, as it put the Hornets up by one at 53-52.  Anthony Ifedi added a free throw to put the Hornets up by two.  The Bulldogs still had hope as the there were 9.5 seconds left when timeout was called.  The Bulldogs drove to the basket, but hit the bottom of the rim when the lay -up was put up.  The Hillside crowd erupted and flooded the floor to cover the Hillside players, cheerleaders, and coaches.  The Hornet's pulled the biggest upset of the night, shocking North Carolina's #3 ranked team.  The Hornets travel to Danville, VA to play George Washington tomorrow night.
