Application
A. Lasers in inspection
  • Inspection of manufacturing process means quality control, industrial sensing and gauging, nondestructive testing.
  • Automated inspection outperforms human inspection (for high volume, high rate operations).
  • Laser based optical sensors can be used for remote inspection of high temperature products or otherwise inaccessible parts.
  • Coupled with the advent of opto-electronics detectors, laser sensors can be integrated into fully automated manufacturing processes.
B. Laser drilling and cutting of metal parts
  • They are affected by absorption of laser energy to create surface melting and boiling.
  • No advantage of laser drilling of a 1 mm hole in a 2 mm Cu sheet.
  • Definite advantage to use laser to drill 0.02 mm hole in a 0.02 mm sheet.
Some properties of laser drilling:
  • Contactless machining
  • Variable l , source can be tailored to the workpiece
  • Adjustable pulse duration providing close control over hole depth
  • Small heat affected zone
  • Good spatial control over hole location
Advantages of laser surface hardening over conventional technology
  • Low total heat input resulting in minimal distortion
  • Best for thin and small diameter workpieces
  • Applicable to internal surfaces; the area heated is easily controlled
  • Narrow hardened regions are easily obtained
  • Hardening proceeds without contamination of environment
  • Rapid temperature cycling reduces oxidation
  • Applicable to complex shape, e.g. gear teeth
