Standards for Laser Equipment

International standards on laser products and systems (IEC825, BS7192, ANSI Z136.3, etc) divide lasers into 5 classes according to their power:

Class 1, 2, 3A, 3B and 4

Class 1 : - Inherently safe (MPE* under any condition)

- Safe by virtue of engineering design.

Class 2 : - Low power. Continuous output power < 0.001W

- Apply to visible radiation (400 – 700 nm)
- Not inherently safe, but eye protectionn by aversion responses, including blinking.

Class 3A : - Continuous output power in visible range < 0.005W.

- Power output for invisible radiation < 5 times the AEL** for class 1 lasers.
- Direct viewing with optical aids (e.g. binoculars) hazardous.
- Not inherently safe, but eye protectionn by aversion responses, including blinking.

Class 3B : - Output power in excess of AELs for class 3A lasers.

- Continuous output power < 0.5W.
- Direct viewing hazardous.
- Safe viewing via diffused reflector, prrovided that (a) min. viewing distance :13 cm, (b) max. viewing time : 10 sec.

Class 4 : - Power output in excess of AELs for class 3B lasers.

- Diffused reflections may be hazardous.
- May cause skin injuries.
- May constitute fire risk.
