THE BARENAKED LADIES

Easily one of the greatest bands to come from Canada (or anywhere else, for that matter), the Barenaked Ladies are 5 fully clothed men. The band began in 1988 when Steven Page and Ed Robertson, long time friends, decided to start playing together. They played any show they could get, using the name Barenaked Ladies when going on stage. Next, Andrew and Jim Creegan, who would become the pianist and bass player of the group, joined. They were followed by Tyler Stewart, the drummer. The Ladies toured Canada and some of the UK heavily, building up a strong fan basis, before releasing Gordon, they're debut in 1992. Gordon sold about 1.3 million copies world wide, sweeping the music industry in Barenaked fever. Next came Maybe You Should Drive, Which wasn't quite as popular as Gordon, but still sold as many copies as the Rolling Stones "Voodoo Lounge Tour." After the second CD, Andrew Creegan left the band for college, leaving the Ladies a quartet. This didn't stop them from releasing Born on a Pirate Ship, they're third CD. The singles "Shoebox" and "Old Apartment" made there way to the states, setting the stage for their first platinum US CD, Rock Spectacle. Rock Spectacle was the Barenaked Ladies Greatest hits...live. With songs taken from the Born on a Pirate Ship tour, Rock Spectacle went on to be huge. By now the Ladies were up to 5 members again, having picked up pianist Kevin Hearn shortly before beginning the BOAPS tour. The hit single Brian Wilson was rereleased as well. Then, in July of 1998, Stunt came out. This CD brought the ladies back to their Gordon roots, mixing the same spontaneous humor and the seriousness of the ballads that made them big in the first place. BNL is touring with H.O.R.D.E festival this year, and have stolen just about every show they've played. There is nothing quite like Barenaked Ladies live (you take that any way you want), where they make up songs on the spot, dance, have sing alongs, tell stories, and dodge Kraft Dinner during the singing of "If I Had a Million Dollars." Barenaked Ladies: Truly a Band for the 90s!
