How to Clip a Rabbit's Nails

* A rabbits nails must not be left so that they just grow and are never cut. Long nails can cause problems (sore hocks mainly).

a. How do I clip a rabbit’s nails?
1. It is easiest to have someone helping when clipping nails.
2. Hold the rabbit in a secure hold on your lap or have the person helping you hold it on their lap.
3. To clip the front toe nails hold the front foot and clip each nail. For the back feet hold the back foot out from under the rabbit a little bit and clip all nails.
4. NOTE - The pink in the nails is blood, if you clip where the blood is the
rabbit can bleed really bad. When you are clipping and you start seeing some kinda white powdery substance you have clipped the nail short enough. This means that you are close to where the blood is. If you happen to clip where the blood is and the nail starts bleeding put some corn starch in a bowl and dip the rabbits foot in it. Keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn’t keep bleeding. If it bleeds just a little bit after you have dipped the nail in cornstarch that is ok. You may want to even dip the foot in the cornstarch several times just to make sure it does not bleed.
5. If the rabbits nails are real long the blood will be farther down in the nail.
When they are shorter there is not as much blood in the nails. If the nails are real long and you can only cut them a little bit just wait about a week and the blood should not be as far down as when they were first cut then they can be clipped again.
