Good Times, a Norman Jay compilation (Nuphonic),(2CD)
A fitting tribute to two of the most important DJs in London over the past 20 years! Sure, Gilles Peterson has a worldwide radio show, Russ Dewbury's got his Afro funk grooves, and Keb Darge has redefined the funk scene -- but way before any of them Norman Jay was blowing out the rare grooves in London, hipping that city to a motherlode of great soul and funk back when most folks were still twiddling with post-punk club tracks or bad knock-off acid house records. Teamed with his brother Joey, the pair has been a seminal part of the Notting Hill carnival every year -- as their Good Times Sound System pumps out a mix of club, soul, reggae, and funk as a never-ending soundtrack for this massive annual party. Nuphonic have come up with a stunning tribute to the pair, serving up a heaping platter of great rare tracks that perfectly capture the Good Times spirit, with enough music to take you late into the afternoon of any carnival Saturday. Titles include "Funky Nassau" by Ray Munnings, "Open Up" by Chic, "If You Really Love Me" by Stevie Wonder, "Thank You (MAW mix)" by Bebe Winans, "Mission Impossible" by Byron Lee & The Dragonaires, "Prophecy" by Fabian, "Optimistic" by Sounds Of Blackness, "Rebel Without A Pause" by Public Enemy, "Sound Of Da Police" by KRS One, "Stone To The Bone (7" version)" by James Brown, "Fearless" by Incognito, "El Bobo" by Webster Lewis, "California Soul" by Marlena Shaw, "Just Us" by Two Tons Of Fun, "Hanging On A String (ext mix)" by Loose Ends, "I Heard That" by Eddie Russ, and "I Hear Music In The Streets" by Unlimited Touch. 27 tracks in all! http://www.dustygroove.com
