THE CHURCH OF GOLD

A Clear Mind is necessary for Rational Living!

As a baby boomer and one-time guru, and a lifelong "seeker," Harry once sought to "expand" or enhance his consciousness through artificial means.

For years he fought the suggestions that he would benefit from "mind expanding" chemical assistance. Eventually he decided to be more "open minded," and had some very pleasant experiences. Years later, he realized these indulgences had become and end in themselves, rather than the means to some end full of wisdom. That was when he realized his path was difficult to leave, once entered. It seemed surrounded by a "slippery slope." Fortunately, Harry found there are many willing helpers.

Alcoholics Anonymous has helped so many people that even an Atheist is willing to praise them. If you encounter a group that seems rigid and not welcoming, try another group. They are as diverse as the humanity they spring from. Officially they are a "fellowship...not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution." The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking (But some members forget that...)

Some AA groups and members are "spiritually" oriented in a way that makes nonbelievers or members of non-Christian religions uncomfortable. Some of them have found another way to reach sobriety at Rational Recovery, where you can recover from drugs and alcohol without mysticism. And you can recover online! You have it in you to do it! Harry finds founder Jack Trimpey's zeal a bit excessive, especially when he declared on their web site an end to all [12-step] meetings, but he has been helpful to many.

Both AA and RR people helped him in his journey of discovery. Because Harry is such a "ham" and a natural performer, he found great pleasure in going on "commitments" at AA meetings to tell his story. While many participants dislike standing in front of a group, Harry loves to wield a microphone, and has had hundreds of "audiences" rolling in the aisles with his tales of saving the world while losing one's self.

Now Harry has set out to conquer his "Feast Beast," (a Rational Recovery concept) and give up his "Ice Cream Diet," perhaps moving into "The Zone," to be darn near perfect! As of the latest update, (see home page) perfection is not an issue... Other addictions have included Pac Man and Missile Command, then Solitaire and Wintris, television (B movies a specialty), self-help books, and nearly anything that seemed to give pleasure. Is this "an addictive personality," or just one more big immature boy in a man's body?
