    Notes about ripping
We will start by ripping the DVDs that have the scenes we want to the hard drive. I recommend using Smartripper for ripping your VOB files to disk because it can rip by chapter, which can save you some editing. To rip by chapter using Smartripper, push the "Movie" button under "Rip-Method". I recommend ripping each chapter to a separate folder to keep things organized.

Step #1: Editing Vob files

If your very lucky, the chapter(s) you extract have only has the scene(s) you want and nothing else. So then you are ready to go onto step 4. However, most of the time each VOB I extract has a lot of footage that I do not want so I am left with the unpleasant prospect of editing a VOB.

As far as I know there is no freeware program that allows you to edit VOB files visually. Many nice utilities exist for cutting VOBs, but without a video display how do you tell where to cut? The method below is a quick and dirty method of editing or cutting VOBs visually. You will need the following programs:

  • Windows Media Player 6.x or other sofware that can play VOBs and has a readout of seconds elapsed.
  • vStrip GUI

Finding the start and end points of the scene you want to save

First open the VOB you wish to edit in Windows Media Player or other similar program.

Next move the progress slider to the start of the part of the VOB that you want to extract. Press pause when you found it and write down the number of seconds that elapsed since the VOB started playing.

For example, say we wish to save the the part of a VOB where Anne Heshe and Joan Chen are driving on the freeway. You would move the little slider in Windows Media Player to the start of the scene and press pause. Now look in the lower right corner of media player and write down the number of seconds that have elapsed since the start of the VOB.

Windows Media Player

After this is done you need to find the end of the scene that you want to extract from the VOB, so it's the same process. Find it in Media player and write down the seconds that have elapsed since the beginning of the VOB.

Now convert your scene start and end times to seconds and write it down as below:

scene beginning = 1min 24 seconds = 84 seconds
scene end = 2 min = 120 seconds

....Move on to Step 2
