PAST TO PRESENT

Prior to the organization of the
volunteer fire department in 1916, residents of Honea Path were protected from
the menace of fire by volunteers summoned by the town fire bell and the old
Chiquola Mill whistle. After the town grew, it became evident that such
protection was not adequate, therefore, a T-model Ford truck was purchased and a
home-made hose cart was constructed. This improvement in equipment sparked
the formation of
the first regular volunteer fire department.
1928 -
New Chevrolet truck was purchased and another home-made hose car was constructed
by taking the hose bed from the T-model Ford and placing this bed on the new
Chevrolet truck. Shortly after this, a front mount pump was placed on the
new truck, which enabled the fire department for the first time to boost the
water pressure coming from the fire hydrants.
1930
- The old town bell was replaced with a new electric siren which gave the
firemen an ultra modern alert system.
1942 - The
town purchased a commercial built fire pumper. This truck was equipped with a
250 gallon booster tank and a 500 gallon per minute pump.
1959 - A
new American LaFrance Corporation pumper was purchased.
1973 - A
new John Beam Corporation pumper was purchased. This truck contained a 500
gallon booster tank and a 750 gallon per minute pump.
1973 - A
monitoring system was installed and all firemen were provided with a radio
monitor in his home.
