About the Conference

The M.A. class at SFSU organizes a graduate student conference in the fall semester of their second year. The annual event provides a valuable experience both in that it facilitates interaction and exchange among peers and is an opportunity to learn first hand all of the necessary planning that an academic conference requires.

Conference History

Our ignaugrel conference was held in 1996 and focused on the work and legacy of Maya Deren. It led to the anthology, Maya Deren and the American Avant-Garde, edited by Bill Nichols.

In 1998, the conference was held in conjunction with Visible Remains, an international conference on documentary.
