Basics

IDS Jobs is organized in a way to provide quick and focused information on jobs and internships in the International Development Studies sector.

If you are new to the site I suggest you begin at Getting Started where you will learn more about the purpose and aim of the site.

Navigation bars at the top and left of the page list all of the areas available to you.

Job Information

Three separate pages are devoted to finding the latest job information. Each of these sites can be found in the top and side navigation bars. In the top navigation bar they are the three links at the bottom that look like this...

In the left navigation bar they look like the links to the right. When your mouse curser hovers over one of the links it changes the background colour of the link to light green and underlines the link. A description of the three pages is below...

CURRENT POSTINGS

Lists a variety of postings from sites such as Charity Village. It is updated regularly, and provides a few links to other jobs posting sites.

Listings on the page are presented in the following format

Hiring Organization
Title of Position
A brief description of the position, usually taken from the posting itself.
Deadline: Date of deadline

The 'arrow' - indicates that the information that follows it is a link that will open in a new window. You will notice that hovering your mouse over the link will make the link underlined, and the background colour become light green.

JOB SITES

Over 50 internet job sites broken into three categories.
- Specifically IDS Related
- General Job Sites
- Job Sites Focused Outside Canada

Each category lists the title of the Job Site which also serves as a link to the organization that will open in a new window, and gives a short blurb about what you will find there. Potential listed information includes; whether you need to register to use information, the sector or geographical focus of the site, and its layout and general ease of usability.

A sample listing is as follows:

Careers Without Borders
Recruitment web site dedicated to international jobs in relief and development. Need to create a profile to register.

RESOURCES

This section lists a variety of sources available that will yield information on development related topics, potential job listings, or opportunities in the fields of education, activism or volunteerism.

A few major organizations are listed at top that provide links and information about job opporunities all over the world.

These are followed by a listing of most human resource websites at Canadian Universities and (some) Colleges. The positions posted on these sites are often not posted anywhere else and I strongly suggest visiting these sites often. The names of the institutions are links to the human resource department and often you will need to find the appropriate link to read the job listings.

The following section lists a number of development organizations in Canada (to the letter "c") taken from the Canadian Council for International Cooperation guide published a couple years ago. A link to the abbreviated internet guide put out by the CCIC is included. There is also a mention to the guides provided by Charity Village, an incredibly useful tool for those seeking information on any non-profit topic in Canada.

Next is a listing of all (International) Development Studies programmes in Canada (I put the word international in brackets because the programme at Queen's specifically omits the word international to bring attention to the aspects of development that are unique to Canada).

A listing of "Other" sites follows that includes development focused organizations or groups that do not exactly fit into any of the other categories.

Finally there is section for listserves that relate to international development issues. A listserv is basically an email community where like-minded individuals have subscribed to a service that sends out messages based around a common theme (development for instance, or forestry, or hockey...). Members are encouraged to share this information and contribute their own information or ideas. Hopefully this section will expand in the near future.
