Some Thank You/Parting Gifts
I've been trying to think of something to give back, for those who'd like more than just a "thank you".....can't really think of anything though. I write, but nothing most people would be interested in....can't think of useful advice or helpful info that anyone could use....simmers can find my stuff at Livin-It-Up.net.....all I can come up with is suggesting a search of The Wayback Machine for amusing sites you haven't seen in ages. HampsterDance.com would be one such arguably useless site :)
There's also Snopes.com, where you can read up on scads of urban legends, including how legit all those emails are.
Actually, now that I think about it....I know a bit about Internet goings-on, so maybe that can be my contribution: if you don't have a program like AdAware or Spybot Search & Destroy, I'd highly recommend visiting those links. Spyware is increasingly common these days, never know when something will end up on your computer and start causing problems. Just this morning I found a harmless (but annoying) little bugger, and have no idea where it could have come from.
SpywareInfo.com is a great place to learn more and find out how to get rid of nearly anything you discover. There's accurate info, updated programs and links, and forums where you can give and receive support. Merijn.org is part of that site, and extremely useful for combatting malware.
That's only part of the process -- if you're not using a firewall and antivirus program while online, you should be. Most computers come installed with something, so be sure to keep them updated as often as possible to keep up with all the new junk (and trust me, it's pretty much a daily thing nowadays).
Learn more about viruses and other malware and other junk, since education is the best prevention. Need a free antivirus program or firewall? Grisoft's AVG Antivirus and Zonelabs' ZoneAlarm are both excellent, frequently updated, and not a drain on the computer's resources.
