Who's the Boss? Villa Capri has incosistent service, but nice pie
By Steven Melling

Tony’s Villa Capri is not exclusively a pizza place, but their Napolitana style pie is probably their best selling item. The pie at Villa Capri is consistently delightful, which makes the usually substandard service excusable.

The servers, whom I think are exclusively female, never seem too thrilled to be at work. Don’t expect to get anything too quickly. And don’t think you’ll have some happy young waitress who writes “Thanks! -- Suzy” on your receipt. Your food arrives when it is ready, so don’t try asking “how much longer on my pizza” .

The last time I went there, my girlfriend and I sat for over five minutes before anyone gave us the time of day. It was her first visit, so all I could say was “The food’s going to be really good.” Luckily, Villa Capri didn’t make a liar out of me.

We started things off with an ample basket of breadsticks. The variety served at Villa Capri are small, crisp and quite tasty. We also ordered a couple of house salads, which were basically just iceberg lettuce with a slightly-sweet Italian dressing.. This was all well and good, but it merely helped condition our palettes for the delectable pie we were about to receive.

Napolitana pizza has a crisp , thin crust, but it isn’t exactly unleavened bread (if you want to take communion, check out Imo’s). The sauce is ostensibly “authentic” and applied in perfect moderation. Toppings are all rather fresh, including freshly cooked sausage and meatballs.

Villa Capri is a pretty nice place to go if you have a troublemaker friend along who doesn’t want to eat pizza. The place has plenty of other fine Italian fare, including pasta and sandwiches. They also serve a few things that aren’t vaguely Italian -- Chicken Livers and French fried shrimp. But most diners seem to stick to the fine pizza Tony and his staff have been making “for over 40 years.”
