SPECIES
Hamsters belong to the family of rodents living in burrows, desert areas with extreme temperature ranged from -3oC to 52oC within the space of 24 hours under high humidity.
They can be classified into a variety of species based on their origins, viz.
Chinese hamster
European hamster or black-bellied hamster
Syrian hamster or golden hamster
Characteristics:
Cream, cinnamon, white sepia, honey, silver-blue, dark or golden in colour
Piebalds, mosaics, satinized and tortoiseshells in banding
Black, red or ruby beady eyes with colour-blindness
Cheek pouches
Life expectancy of at most three years
Behaviour:
Live in solitary like hermits
Sleep most of the time but very active during the night time
Like to hoard food in their cheek pouches
Like to clean themselves fastidiously
Like to eat their own droppings which contain vitamin B and K
Human friendly and loved to be patted gently
Buying Tips:
Only young hamsters, 3 to 4 inches long (i.e. 7.5 to 10 cm)
Wide-open, beady eyes
Smooth unbroken fur, utterly clean in appearance
Alert and inquisitive
