EvaluationFor success in this unit, students need facility with the content areas addressed in the text. As students complete the exercises, encourage them to note areas in which they have difficulty in their subject journal. Give time at the beginning of class to address questions that they have. Journals should be collected periodically so that you can respond to the level of inquiry they show in their entries. Also, the master worksheets found here give students the extra practice they need, and provide a good scaffold from their prior knowledge. Encourage students to self-evaluate when they are doing with this material. Some meta-cognitive journal entries may aid them in this regard. The group work activities in this unit should give time for collaborative learning and be a good means for formative evaluation. The project focus group, for example, provides a time for reinforcement and behavior modeling. For this particular unit, a 50-50 split between the project and the chapter test should provide the information needed for a summative mark. This test should be modified to reflect actual class-time spent teaching each topic. Both the test and the project ensures that students have a firm grasp of rational number concepts and can organize data in matrix form - meeting the goals of this unit. Since there is a reliance on self-assessment here in terms of the practice problems and worksheets, ensure students know that you value their learning whenever it happens. If students want to put the practice in, then schedule a re-test (on your schedule). This ensures you assess the student as authentically as possible. The answer key for the chapter test is provided in the guide. A rubric for the project should be developed in conjunction with the students.
