Unit Overview

Grade 9: Numeracy Unit
This unit is based around the concept of numeracy. Numeracy involves not just basic number skills, but also the ability to integrate basic skills in contexts that require high levels of literacy to interpret situations and make judgments. The skills of reasoning, problem-solving, communicating, and making connections are also fundamental components of good mathematical thinking - along with calculation, estimation, observation and other math skills which we use in our everyday lives.

Numeracy may be considered as a way of knowing - one which helps students better understand all of their school subjects. With this in mind, we can appreciate the value of this area of mathematical study for our prospective students.

The goal of this unit is to extend the numeracy level of students to include the rational number system, and to focus on ways of organizing data, such as matrices.

Rationale
This work lays the foundation for working with ‘real world’ numbers (decimals and fractions, not just integers), and students begin to learn rules with table (matrix) manipulation. Knowing this unit is a pre-requisite for study in almost every other strand of study in mathematics.
