At present, a lot of Cuban people unknown their real name, and refer to them like "maltes" or "poodle with maltes". Starting from this unknown, un interesting trail about Bichon Havanaise origins appear.

When the Spanish colonization begin in Cuba, starting from XV century, different canine breed from Spain arrive to the island. In the beginning they were work breed, which had as a mission help to consolidate conquest processes. Later, Bichon kind dogs were coming. Is interesting to explain the origin of Bichon word (woolly dog), which was adopted in the Renaissance period in France and could be a contraction of Barbichon (woolly dog) and be related with the Barbet world, this was denomination of the ancient water dog. In our days, Bichon word is used to many dogs breed which, has common ancestors and means "long hair's and professed dog".

Starting from XVII century, when the main Cuban industry began to develop, a new rich class fond of breeding company dogs, or lapdog, how they were called in that period. This dog was considering sign of extreme care and immediately he overrun the Cuban families. The company dogs have been living in Europe since the Renaissance period, in that time they were the favorite pet of ladies and gentleman of rich families at the old continent.

Year after year, the canine breed were changed because of climate conditions, food and blood relationship. This nature factors join to the "Creole style" and the crossing of similar dogs specimen gave origin a different kind of Havanaise: smallest, with long and silky hair and completely white, because of all this it was named Blanquito de La Habana.

In the XIX century begin the market with others cultures different from Spanish culture. The new dogs breed has been introduced in Cuba, such as Poodle or Caniche, dog with German origin but which has a French adoption. Is in this moment when really born our history.

Physically, Poodle or Caniche seems a little to our havaneses, because of Cuban breeders crossed him with the Blanquito. The results of all this, was enough uniform dog for considering a new breed, the Havanaise. Although he had bigger size than Blanquito, he had more vigorous construction, with a shining and long wavy hair, he kept a vivacius character, happy and intelligence was like Blanquito.

The Havanaise was the colonial aristocracy dog until the American intervention, which imposed their fashions and he has been replaced by another breeds such as Chihuahua, Pekinese and others, the Havanaise became the favorite toy of Cuban families, converting himself in a popular dog, what helped him to keep alive his breed.

In 1959, with the revolution triumph, a lot of family emigrated to USA and took with them their small pets, leaving in our country a small number of Havanese. However, the breed was extendedly since USA until Europe.

At the beginning of 80th , in Cuba began to be born again the fondness for the dogs and the first dogs clubs were founded. Meanwhile, the Havanaise stayed in the forgetfulness, in spite of International Cinological Federation have approved in 1963 the cuban official patrimony about this breed.

And only in 1991 a small group of person in Cuba founded Cuban Club of Havanaise which had the intention rescue, develop and promote the breed standards which had been retired from Cuba by the ICF surprisingly way in 1989.
