October 21, 1949 (p. 1) M.B. BLANTON KILLED SUNDAY AFTERNOON Walter Rush Held Without Bond On Charge; Moonshine Still Found Near Scene of Killing. ~~~~~~~ On Richland Creek, near the Knox-Laurel border Sunday afternoon, M.B. Blanton, 26, was shot and killed by Walter Rush, 36, according to officers. Rush, married and father of eight, was arrested seven hours later at his home by W. E. Woods and two other officers of the State Police force and County Attorney Sampson B. Knuckles, who was first on the scene. Mr. Knuckles stated there were a number of eye-witnesses. The accused, who wielded a pistol, is held without bond awaiting grand jury action. According to Mr. Knuckles the crime took place not far from where a moonshine still was suspected of operating Monday morning. He and C.A. Mills, sheriff, and deputies, after a short search, uncovered the still within a quarter of a mile of the scene of the slaying. It was on land belonging to Champ Sasser, it was stated. The still was brought into town by the officers and was assembled intact in the Rapp Lumber Co. windows. It was constructed of first class material and was one of the largest confiscated in this year. Mr. Knuckles and other county officers, with the aid of the State police force, have been vigorous in their drive on the illicit stills of the county and are determined to clean them out as rapidly as possible. Wednesday night Knuckles and officers Mills, Jones, Davis and Fannon apprehended Sasser and took him into custody and also captured his brother-in-law, Mitchell Wagner, who more than one year ago was given a sentence of six month and $500 fine on an old charge in circuit court and who had never been caught. In County Court Sasser entered a plea of guilty and was given a fine of $100 and a jail sentence of 30 days --in addition to a $1,000 peace bond, by J. F. Catron, judge pro tem. ![]() ~The 1949 news photo of Camp's still~ | |
