Nellie was a very small, weak baby. After her mother died in childbirth, she was brought up by her grandmother, Amy LOCK.But she loved her father dearly, and always looked forward to his return from the sea.

After Ellen's mother died in 1915, Ellen looked after her younger siblings in her father's house at 53 Berry Head Road, Brixham, until Ellen's father re-married in 1916.

Ellen married William Stafford BLACKMORE, son of William BLACKMORE and Dorothea Kate née HILL, on 18 Aug 1917 in Brixham. William was born on 12 Jan 1898 and died in Aug 1969 in Paignton, Devon.

William's father had died in 1914 and his mother had married Ellen's father in 1916. (In other words, Edmund's daughter married his wife's son!) William had moved into 53 Berry Head with his mother in 1916, and he and Ellen continued to live their after their marriage and had all their three children there.
