8.3 James John Beazley PHILLIPS ( James (3) PHILP , James (2) , Elizabeth (2) , Thomas (3) , Thomas (2) , Thomas (1) , Jacob (1) ) was born in 1862 in Torquay. 

James moved with his family to Yorkshire some time between 1870 and 1881, when he was a silk mill hand in Manningham, . In 1891 and 1901, he was recorded as a general labourer living with his wife and children (including his stepson Coates) in nearby Bradford.

James married Grace BRAYSHAW née RAISTRICK in 1888. Grace was born in 1857 in Shipley, Yorkshire. She had previously  married Coates BRAYSHAW in 1879 and had a son Coates BRAYSHAW born in 1887 in Bradford.

James and Grace had the following children:

8.8 Ann Maria PHILLIPS ( Richard James (1) PHILLIPS , William (3) PHILLIPS , William (2) PHILLIPS , William (1) PHILLIPS , Thomas (2) PHILP , Thomas (1) , Jacob (1) ) was born on 5 Jul 1858 in Nile Street, Hull, and died on 11 Mar 1932 in Dartmouth, Devon.

After her marriage, Ann Maria at first lived in Brixham, being recorded at 22 Temperance Place in 1881. The family moved to Dartmouth in about 1892, living in St. Saviour's Court (1896), 1 Charles St. (1909), Fairfax Place (1914) and Newcomin Lodge, 49 Newcomin Road (opposite what used to be the primary school) from 1918 to her death. She was cared for in her old age by her son Bob and his wife Winn, who lived with her after their marriage.

Ann Maria married William James Pepperell SANDERS, son of Brixham sawyer William SAUNDERS and Mary Ann née GREGORY, on 2 Oct 1883 in Brixham, Devon. William was born on 19 Dec 1849 in Brixham and died on 22 Feb 1921 in Dartmouth. His death was also reported in the Dartmouth Chronicle. 8.9 Richard Thomas PHILLIPS ( Richard James (1) PHILLIPS , William (3) PHILLIPS , William (2) PHILLIPS , William (1) PHILLIPS , Thomas (2) PHILP , Thomas (1) , Jacob (1) ) was born on 28 Jun 1860 in Brixham and died on 5 Dec 1916.

Richard was a Brixham fisherman. In the 1881 census, he was recorded as a mate on board the Presto moored in Madron Harbour, Penzance. (His father was the master, and his brothers Edmund and James were also in the crew.) Richard gained his Certificate of Competency as "skipper of a vessel employed in fishing only" after an examination held in Brixham on 8 Jan 1884, at which time he was living at Beach Square. He was the owner of Camellia (1902-1917) and its skippers from 1889 to 1893. Before his marriage, he was living at Furzes Alley, Brixham, with his parents.

8.10 Martha Frances PHILLIPS ( Richard James (1) PHILLIPS , William (3) PHILLIPS , William (2) PHILLIPS , William (1) PHILLIPS , Thomas (2) PHILP , Thomas (1) , Jacob (1) ) was born on 9 May 1862 in Hull and died on 22 Mar 1927 in Brixham.

Martha was born during one her father's several moves to Hull. She finally returned to Brixham with her parents in about 1865, and at the age of 19 was a domestic servant working for William Cove (baker and confectioner) at 28 Fore Street. In 1888, she was a witness at the marriage of her brother Edmund (the other witness being her future husband) and in 1891 was recorded as a housekeeper in her parents' home in Furzes Alley. A gravestone in Brixham churchyard commemorates her, her husband and their daughter Hettie.

Martha married Samuel (1) HOLLAND, son of Brixham mariner William HOLLAND and Mary Ann née BEALE, on 4 Jul 1891 in Brixham. Samuel was born on 30 Jul 1861 and died on 9 May 1944 in Brixham.

Samuel was another Brixham fisherman. At the time of the 1881 census, Sam was an A B Seaman on the vessel Presto moored in Madron Harbour, Penzance. (His future father-in-law and three future brothers-in-law were also in the crew.) In 1891, he was recorded as a trawler owner living with his mother at 1 Hollands Court, and in 1901 he was a fishing smack owner. In fact, he was owner and skipper of Guess (1889-1920) and owner of Guess Again (1916-1922) until he sold it to his brother-in-law Arthur. Samuel's address while he was owner of Guess was Greens Court, Higher St. then 83 New Road, and his address as owner of Guess Again was 3 New Road.

Oral history has it that Sam used to annoy harbourmasters when they asked him the name of his boat by replying "Guess!". After they had got used to that little joke, they had to put up with the answer "Guess again!".

8.11 Edmund Albert PHILLIPS ( Richard James (1) PHILLIPS , William (3) PHILLIPS , William (2) PHILLIPS , William (1) PHILLIPS , Thomas (2) PHILP , Thomas (1) , Jacob (1) ) was born on 24 Jul 1865 in Brixham and died on 3 Mar 1939.

Edmund was another Brixham fisherman. In the 1881 census, he was recorded as a deck boy on the Presto moored in Madron Harbour, Penzance. (His father and his brothers Richard and James were also in the crew.) Later, he skippered Geina (1892-1918), Camellia (1895-1920) and Arghiro (1901-1924). He also owned Camellia for 4 months in 1917, having bought it from his brother Richard.

In 1891 Edmund was living at 12 St. Peters Hill and was still also living in Brixham in 1901. He owned 53 Berry Head Road and lived there from at least 1915 until he died.

Edmund Albert PHILLIPS

Edmund married (1) Eliza Lateman NICHOLAS, daughter of a shipwright, on 5 Aug 1888 in Newlyn by Penzance, Cornwall. Eliza was born in 1865 in Penzance and christened there on 1 Apr 1865. She died in 1915 or 1916.

Edmund and Eliza had the following children:

	9.23	M	ii	Edmund PHILLIPS was born in 1891 in Brixham and was drowned at sea in 1915. He is said to have been swept overboard during World War I, but no War Graves record has been found.
	9.24	M	iii	Henry PHILLIPS was born in 1892 in Brixham, Devon. In the 1901 census, he was living in Brixham with a HALEWOOD family. Henry married Winnie HALL.
	9.25	M	iv	Albert (2) PHILLIPS was born in 1894 in Brixham. He married Elsie SNELL.
	9.26	F	v	Jane PHILLIPS married Theo Valentine FIELDING.

	9.29	F	viii	Emily PHILLIPS was born in Brixham and died in an old people's home in Paignton in the early 1990s. She is said to have married twice, her second husband being some 25 years her junior. One of her husbands was Fred SWEETLAND.
	9.30	F	ix	Sylvia PHILLIPS was born in Brixham. She married a Scotsman by the name of McLENNA or McLELAND.

Edmund married (2) Dorothea Kate HILL on 13 Nov 1916 in Brixham, Devon. A year later, Dorothea's son by her first marriage married Edmund's daughter Ellen by his first marriage. In other words, Edmund's daughter married his wife's son!

When Edmund died in 1939, Dorothea's daughter Margaret and her husband moved in with her at 53 Berry Head Road. Margaret died in the early 1940s and the house was inherited by her husband when Dorothea died in 1943.

8.12 Joseph James Leighton PHILLIPS ( Richard James (1) PHILLIPS , William (3) PHILLIPS , William (2) PHILLIPS , William (1) PHILLIPS , Thomas (2) PHILP , Thomas (1) , Jacob (1) ), known in the family as James, was born on 7 Nov 1866 in Brixham and died on 22 Dec 1955.

James was another Brixham fisherman. In the 1881 census, he was recorded as a cook on the Presto moored in Madron Harbour, Penzance. (His father and his brothers Edmund and Richard were also in the crew.) The 1891 and 1901 censuses records him as a fisherman. Later, he was skipper of Boy Fred (1907-1934), Guess Again (1916-1934) and Kathleen Winnie (1916-1939).

Joseph married Henrietta HAYDEN on 13 Dec 1891. Henrietta was born in 1865 in Brixham, a daughter of fisherman George HAYDEN and his wife Susan née COBBLEY.

Shortly before her marriage, Henrietta was a laundress living with her parents in Station Hill.

8.13 Samuel Henry Allen (1) PHILLIPS ( Richard James (1) PHILLIPS , William (3) PHILLIPS , William (2) PHILLIPS , William (1) PHILLIPS , Thomas (2) PHILP , Thomas (1) , Jacob (1) ) was born on 23 Sep 1869 in Brixham, Devon. He died on 20 Feb 1942 and was buried in the non-conformist cemetery in Higher Brixham..

Samuel was also a Brixham fisherman, recorded as such in the 1891 and 1901 censuses. In 1832, he was unable to attend his sister Ann Maria's funeral because he was at sea.

Samuel married Elizabeth Rosina LEMAIN, daughter of Brixham labourer William LEMIN and his wife Alice. Elizabeth was born in 1869 in Brixham.

8.14 Arthur John PHILLIPS ( Richard James (1) PHILLIPS , William (3) PHILLIPS , William (2) PHILLIPS , William (1) PHILLIPS , Thomas (2) PHILP , Thomas (1) , Jacob (1) ), known in the family as "Jack", was born on 23 Nov 1872 in Brixham and died on 6 Feb 1951.

Jack was yet another Brixham fisherman, recorded as such in the 1891 and 1901 censuses. In 1916 he was living at 1 Higher Furzeham and in 1922 at "Harlyn", Berry Head Rd.

Jack sailed in Guess in 1892; was part owner of the Speranza 1887-1917 and its skipper 1903-1912; was the owner of Kathleen Winnie 1916-1925 and one of its skippers 1916-1939; and was the owner of Guess Again 1922-1934 and one of its skippers 1916-1934. He sold Speranza to his wife in 1917 and bought Guess Again from his brother-in-law Samuel Holland in 1922.

Jack married Annie JOHNSON, daughter of Brixham fisherman Samuel JOHNSON and his wife Mary, on 10 May 1900. Annie was born in 1875 in Brixham..

In 1891, Annie was living with her parents at 6 Sea View Terrace, Brixham.

Jack and Annie had the following children:

	9.42	F	ii	Winifred Mary PHILLIPS married Richard FOSTER on 11 Jan 1936. Richard was born on 25 Aug 1908. He died on 18 Mar 1964. Richard and Winifred had no children.

8.15 William Ashford NORRIS ( Charlotte Elizabeth PHILLIPS , William (3) PHILLIPS , William (2) PHILLIPS , William (1) PHILLIPS , Thomas (2) PHILP , Thomas (1) , Jacob (1) ) was born on 18 Aug 1866 in Brixham.

William started his adult life as a fisherman, but then joined the Royal Navy on his 18th birthday.  He  saw service in a large number of  ships, including HMS Cambridge and HMS Defiance and was promoted to Petty Officer in 1890. William was shore pensioned on his 38th birthday and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve. He was called back into active service when World War I broke out and served as Chief Petty Officer until 11 Sep 1919.

William married Ellen Louise WOTTON in Brixham in 1890. Ellen was born in 1865 in Brixham. They had one child:

8.16 Edmund George NORRIS ( Charlotte Elizabeth PHILLIPS , William (3) PHILLIPS , William (2) PHILLIPS , William (1) PHILLIPS , Thomas (2) PHILP , Thomas (1) , Jacob (1) ) was born on 17 Aug 1869 in Brixham.

Like his brother William, Edmund (also known as Edwin) started his adult life as a fisherman and then joined the Royal Navy. In 1891, he was living in Milton Street with his family. In 1901, his family was living in Antony, Cornwall (near Torpoint and not far from Devonport), while William was presumably at sea.

Francis married Evelyn BEHR about 1903. Evelyn was born on 18 May 1884 in Minnesota and died on 26 May 1965 in Hennepin MN. Francis and Evelyn had the following children:

Richard was a blacksmith. He moved with his family from Dittisham to Devonport, Devon, some time between 1891 and 1901.

   John was a domestic gardener. He moved with his family from Slapton to Buckland Tout Saints, Devon, some time before 1894.

John joined the Royal Navy on 7 Sep 1881 as a Boy 2.6 on the Lion based in Devonport. On 24 March he signed up for 10 years, then in 1894 signed up again until he was discharged due to poor health on 25 Apr 1917.

John married (1) Florence JARVIS on 4 Nov 1891 in Plymouth. Florence, daughter of Thomas and Thirza JARVIS, was born in Salcombe, Devon, in 1867 and died in Plymouth in 1897.

After his first wife died, John moved in with his first cousin Rose CRIDGE. Rose was born in 1874 in Dartmouth. John & Rose had the following children:

Charles undertook an apprenticeship as an engine room fitter (probably in Dartmouth) and was still living at home in Dittisham in 1891.  He then became an Royal Navy  engine room artificer and in 1901 was living with his new family at 2 Ryder Road, Devonport.
