Satyavatee and Vyaas Jee

Now Satyavatee was very worried as there was no heir to Hastinaapur's throne. She requested Bheeshm to produce children from Vichitraveerya's childless widows, but Bheeshm clearly refused to do so reminding his promise and vow to Daash Raaj.

At last Satyavatee sent Bheeshm to her first-born son Vyaas Jee. Vyaas Jee came just like that at the call of his mother. In fact he just got up from his Samaadhi. He greeted his mother and asked - "Mother, What are the orders for me?" Satyavatee explained the whole situation and requested him to produce sons from those childless widows according to Dharm. Vyaas Jee said - "Mother, I just got up from my Samaadhi that I got your message. My Roop (look) is not for this purpose, please give me some time - one year, so that I can be presentable to them." Satyavatee said - "Putra, I don't have time." Vyaas Jee said - "All right, then send them to me."

Satyavatee explained everything to Ambikaa and Ambaalikaa and sent Ambikaa first to Vyaas Jee. As she saw him, she got frightened and she closed her eyes with fear (some say that because he was ugly and foul smelly). Later Vyaas Jee said to his mother - "Mother, she will have a strong and brave son, but because she closed her eyes seeing me so her son will be blind." Satyavatee was not happy with this so she sent Ambaalikaa to him. As she saw Vyaas Jee, although she did not close her eyes but she got yellow with fear. Vyaas Jee said to his mother - "Mother, this time she did not close her eyes but she got yellow in color. She will also have a brave son but his health will not be all right and he will be yellow in color."

Now Satyavatee got very very unhappy with this whole affair. She said to Vyaas Jee - "Putra, Give me one more chance." She again went to Ambikaa and asked her to go again to Vyaas Jee. Ambikaa was so scared of Vyaas Jee that this time she didn't go to him herself, but sent her maid to him. The maid felt very happy and fortunate. She received Vyaas Jee with a great happiness and pleasure. This time Vyaas Jee said - "Mother, This time Ambikaa didn't come herself, but sent her maid. She will have a perfect child who will be a great knower of Dharm and justice. And to whoever two kings he will serve they also will have their own place in the history of Bhaarat." After saying this Vyaas Jee went away. Satyavatee was still not satisfied with all this but what could she do.

When the time came Ambikaa gave birth to Dhritraashtra who was blind, Ambaalikaa gave birth to Paandu. He was yellow in color and he did not keep his health very good, and that is why he was named as Paandu. The maid gave birth to Dharmaatmaa Vidur Jee. All three grew up and were educated together . 

Since Dhritraashtra was blind, and such a person could not be crowned as king, Paandu was declared king. Vidur studied Dharm Shaastra and politics so he was appointed as his Chief Minister.

Just before Mahaabhaarat war broke, Vyas Jee came and took his mother and Ambikaa and Ambaalikaa to van saying that "Whatever is going to happen here, you will not be able to see it, so come with me."
