Aang-tachi stop at an Earth-nation mining town. There, they [mostly Katara] accidentally meet Haru, an EarthBender. She follows him, and then confronts him in his mother's shop. However, things are not what they seem; Haru's mother is quite angry at him for being caught EarthBending. Katara-tachi learn that the town was taken over 5 years ago by FireBenders, and that bending is illegal. However, when Haru saves an elderly man from a rocky grave, he ends up being caught and arrested. Katara feels sorry for him, and she, Sokka, and Aang cook up a plan. They manage to fake EarthBending using Aang's AirBending, and Katara is arrested and shipped over to an oiler rig. There, he meets Haru, reunited with his dad. She wants to revolt against the FireBenders, but the rest of the EarthBenders don't; their spirit weathered. But it's Aang and Sokka to the rescue: Aang shuts off all ventilation shafts at the bottom of the ship, then sends coal up the shafts using AirBending. The coal [and Katara] motivates the people to fight back, and they escape... but something doesn't. Katara's neckelace-the one given to her by her deceased mother-was severed... and now Zuko has it.

• We are introduced to Haru, a reluctant yet subtle Earthbender (who, apparently, has a crush on Katara).
• Momo does not Earthbend, in objection to popular belief. It is actually Katara and Aang doing the Earthbending (though neither are actually Earthbending).
