The Great Cataclysm

[All was not well however, and the golden age was short. Zelda and Link both lived a full life, but they both eventually died. When this happened, their Triforce pieces were transported back into the Sacred Realm before Ganon’s greedy hands But he did not want to repeat his earlier mistake. Thus, he merely kept the two, but did not try to use them. Meanwhile, the races began to drift apart. The Sheikah became practically extinct, and the few that remained became a part of Hylian society. The Gerudo, for the most part, left the land of Hyrule, for few would accept the race that created Ganondorf. The Kokiri were once again left alone under the protection of the new Deku Tree. The Dodongos had once again returned to their cave, and the Gorons were on the verge of another famine. They migrated northward, deeper into the Death Mountain Range. Relations between the races became strained. Yet the race that hurt the most was the Zoras. Many of their people had died under Ganondorf's rein, and, even worse, Lord Jabu Jabu had left entirely. Their beloved Queen, Ruto, had not married, and the Zoras were angry that her fiancee would ignore her like that. They blamed everything on the Hylians and their hero, and hostilities sprang up once again. The Zoras retreated into their realm and attacked any who came near it. Before long, the Hylians became the only race still in the kingdom. As a result, the kings of Hyrule had to appoint more and more Hylians as the predecessors of the sages. Ethnocentric ideas appeared in force, and it showed itself in history. ] Before long, the other races were not mentioned in the stories about the Imprisoning War, and soon the term sages was replaced by wise men. Such was the state of Hyrule on the eve of the Cataclysm.

Ganon, who had been trapped in the Sacred Realm, now called the Dark World, had gathered up forces. Some fissures in the seal had appeared through time, and men eager to find the Triforce entered them. There, their forms changed to reflect what was in their hearts and many were used in Ganon's evil army. Ganon was planning to conquer the Light World: Hyrule. But the fissures were only one way, he could not yet enter Hyrule. Time did not corrupt his new pig like body, and he was willing to wait. He had communicated to a man still in the Light World, a [Sheikah] wizard named Agahnim. Agahnim agreed to aid Ganon, for reasons unknown to all. At this time, a gentle yet gullible king ruled the land. He too had a daughter, who was of course named Zelda after the ancient tradition. A boy named Link also lived at this time, the direct descendant of the Hero of Time. He was an orphan and lived with his uncle in a small house, not knowing his destiny.

Famine struck the land. Great storms caused trouble for the citizens of Hyrule. The king, desperate, offered a reward for anyone who could discover the reasons for these troubles. Along came one man, Agahnim, and he stopped the inclement weather and restored the land of Hyrule. The grateful king made the Sheikah his most trusted advisor and named him heir to the seven wise men. The strange wizard was an instant hero. Yet Agahnim was not what he seemed. He soon gained control of the minds of the guards and even the king, so that they might not discover his doings. He planned to send the seven daughters of the wise men, who all held the power of the sages, to the Dark World, where Ganon would use that power to break the seal. Slowly he gathered all of the maidens and, using his wizard powers, sent them into the Dark World. Before long, the only one left was princess Zelda herself. Agahnim locked her in the dungeons of the castle until he was ready to send her off to the Sacred Realm.

The Hylians had some sense of telepathy, although the skill had nearly been lost through time. Zelda could still use that power, and sent a telepathic plea for help. It fell mostly on deaf ears, but two people did hear it. Link awoke after hearing the plea, unsure of what it was. He found his uncle, who should have been in bed at that time, dressed for battle. He too had heard the message. Although Link was told to stay at home, he grabbed a lantern and followed his uncle secretly. He made his way to Hyrule Castle and found a secret passageway to the East of its walls. Inside the passage he found his uncle, severely wounded. Before passing out, his uncle gave him the sword and shield and told him to rescue Zelda. The passage opened up into the castle grounds and Link made his way into the castle. Fighting off guards who had come under Agahnim's control, Link went to the dungeons. He defeated the cell guards, unlocked the door, and went in to find Zelda.

The princess explained to Link what Agahnim was doing. She then told him about another secret passage leading into the sewers of Hyrule. They took that passage, which was in the throne room, and made their way through the rat infested sewers. They eventually found themselves at the Sanctuary, a magical study north of the castle. Zelda, as one of the descendants of the sages, dimly recognized the bloodline of her savior. She thought he could be able to wield the Master Sword to defeat Agahnim, and asked him to meet Sahasrahla, one of the wise men. Yet when Link arrived at his house, Sahasrahla was nowhere to be found. Worse, Link found himself an outcast. Agahnim, after learning of Zelda's escape, let news leak out that Zelda had been kidnapped by the lad. A few of the townspeople still trusted Link, however, and one of them knew of Sahasrahla's whereabouts. He was hiding near the Eastern Palace.

Link found the small house Sahasrahla was living in by the palace. The old man was skeptical when Link asked about the Master Sword. To prove himself, Sahasrahla asked Link to retrieve the pendant of courage from the Eastern Palace. Link did so, taking it from six giant knights who were guarding it. Sahasrahla was now more convinced that this truly was a Hero, and told him of the location of the other two pendants. One was in the desert of mystery. Along the way Link picked up an old book, the Book of Mudora, which held the legends of the Triforce. More importantly, it was translated from the old forgotten languages, and so Link could use it to read the ancient writing found in many of the places he was going. One of these was the desert palace, which contained the pendant of wisdom. Three Lanmolas, giant worms, guarded the pendant, but Link defeated them easily. Only one pendant remained, on top of Death Mountain.

While Link climbed Death Mountain, he found an old man who had lost his lamp. Link discovered that he was one of the wise men hiding from Agahnim. The old man gave him a magic mirror, which could bring one back into the Light World if he should accidentally stumble into the Dark World. It was a useful object, for a portal to the Dark World was just ahead. Link had to enter it to get passed Spectacle Rock, Two giant rocks that were blocking his passage to the Tower of Hera. In the Dark World, Link was surprised to see that he had turned into a rabbit. For one effect of Ganon's power was that, while in the Dark World, one's physical appearance was what was reflected in his heart. Yet Link still had his mirror, and, hopping to a point past Spectacle Rock, warped back to the Light World. Inside the tower he found not only the pendant of power but also the moon pearl, a pearl that protects the bearer from the effects of the Triforce. In this case, it meant that Link would not turn into a bunny if he entered the once Sacred Realm.

Link quickly climbed down the mountain and made his way immediately into the Lost Woods The ruins of the old Hyrule castle town were long gone by that time. Link did not even realize it had once been a town. He made his way to where the Temple of Time had once stood. There was still a clearing there, and the pedestal holding the Master Sword was untouched. Link climbed up, grasped the Master Sword, and pulled. It came up in Link's hands, glowing. Sahasrahla sensed this telepathically and congratulated Link. He was now ready to confront Agahnim and show Hyrule how evil he was. But as he was leaving the forest he realized it was too late. Zelda contacted him telepathically, pleading for help. Agahnim had discovered where Zelda was hiding and sent soldiers to capture her. She was immediately sent to his tower and was put to sleep. Agahnim started to prepare for her departure to the Dark World.

Link raced to the castle. Using the Master Sword, he easily broke through the barrier around Agahnim's tower. The guards tried to stop him, but they were not equipped to handle a Hero and the Sword of Evil's Bane. When Link finally reached Agahnim's chamber, he found the princess on an alter. Agahnim froze Link in place with his magic and continued his incantations. Zelda lifted into the air, an eerie light surrounding her. After a few moments, she suddenly disappeared in a flash of light. Agahnim left then, believing Link would leave as well. But Link, now unfrozen, followed him out onto a wide balcony. Agahnim attacked the young lad with all of his magic. The blade of the Master Sword would not harm his body. Link despaired, but soon realized that the blade repelled evil magic. With that, he waited patiently until Agahnim readied another blast of magic. Link swung his blade and the blast returned to hit the evil wizard. Before long, Agahnim fell. Looking up at the lad, he started to chant his last spell. With his dying breath, Agahnim sent Link to the Dark World. Moreover, the Sages' seal had been broken. It was a small rupture, but it would grow. Ganon and his evil power was ready to conquer the Light World.

But all was not lost. Link was still alive and well, even trapped in the dark world. Sahasrahla contacted him telepathically. He gave the hero suggestions as to where the maidens were held. And so Link found a new quest for himself. He had to free the maidens before Ganon could sap all of their power. They too were transformed, but into crystals, for their hearts were pure. Using Sahasrahla's advice, Link found and freed one of the daughters of the wise men. She told Link where the rest of the girls were held. They were scattered throughout the Sacred Realm, each protected by a guardian. Yet the helmasaur that protected the first one was destroyed easily enough, and Link felt convinced that he could survive.

Link did survive his many perils. Each of the maidens that he rescued gave him some knowledge, and Link began to understand his destiny. They were living in the time of the Great Cataclysm. It is one of the legends of the Triforce. When an evil heart touches the Triforce, the lands are condemned to ruin. However, a hero must appear to challenge the evil Triforce bearer. The Cataclysm was halted indefinitely by the Hero of Time, but now it appeared to be beginning once again. And so, from the bloodline of the first hero, Link was destined to appear to challenge Ganon. If he won the challenge, then prosperity would rule in the land. But if he failed, there would be nothing to stop the evil one from bringing desolation to the land. This is what the maidens, still trapped in their crystals, told Link. Each one made Link more and more resolved to destroy Ganon once and for all. Ganon's army and guardians had failed in destroying Link, and only one crystal remained out of Link's grasp. That crystal was Zelda, trapped inside Turtle Rock on the Dark World version of Death Mountain.

Many strong creatures loyal to Ganon lived on Death Mountain. The evil prince of darkness had built a castle on the mountain, and only the strongest of his minions stayed with him. But Link was a capable warrior, and he fought his way to Turtle Rock. Using the power of the Master Sword and a spell he had learned, the Hero broke into the rock. It did not take long for him to find the princess, who was guarded by a ferocious three - headed dragon. The combined powers of fire and ice were enough to assure Link the victory, and the crystal that contained Zelda was his. Having found a descendant from each of the wise men, there was only one task left. The maidens combined their powers to break the seal around Ganon’s tower, and Link entered. Climbing to the top, Link burst into the beast’s private chamber. He expected a terrible being; he found Agahnim. Confused, Link fought the evil wizard, who seemed more powerful than before. At last Agahnim crumpled to the ground, and from his body arose a horrible pig - like form. It was Ganon.

Ganon had disguised himself as Agahnim, hoping to gain the element of surprise on the hero. Seeing his plot failed, Ganon transformed himself into a bat and flew to the giant pyramid south of the mountain. It was here that he hid the Triforce from everyone, not trusting anybody with its location. Link obviously followed, but did not enter the pyramid immediately. There was a crack to the side which he had ignored before. Yet something was telling him not to, and he blew open the wall. Inside was an ugly fairy, who had been hiding from Ganon for many years. She gave Link special arrows: arrows that had been enhanced with the light magic that Link’s predecessor used so many years before. Armed with the silver arrows and the Master Sword, Link entered the pyramid for his final showdown. Ganon was waiting, guarding the door that led to the Triforce. Ganon proved to be a powerful adversity, but the combined power of the silver arrows and the Master Sword defeated the corrupt use of The Triforce of Power. Ganon collapsed, and Link assumed he was dead. The door was open, and Link entered. The Triforce assembled before him and told him to make a wish. Instantly he, the maidens, and all the other decent people of the Dark World were transported back to the Hyrule. The Triforce was in the hands of Hyrule, and it seemed peace would rein indefinitely. The Great Cataclysm had ended, the hero prevailing.
